واللهby God مجتهِداًstriving earnestly فيin الحَلْفِswearing والقَسَمand oath-taking
ياO بنson of المعزِّal-Muʿizz يميناًan oath غيرَnot متَّهَمِsuspected of falsehood
By God, earnestly swearing and taking an oath,
O son of al-Muʿizz, an oath beyond suspicion:
لوif كانthere were للشكرfor gratitude شخصٌa bodily form يستبينbecomes visible إلىto
عَيْنَيْكyour two eyes فيin غيرِother than أَلفاظٍwords ونُطْقand speech فَمِa mouth
If gratitude had a bodily form that could appear to
your eyes, without words or speech from a mouth,
جعلتُهI set it لكَfor you رأىَsight العَيْنthe eye مُنتَصِباًstanding upright
حتّىso that يبينَit becomes clear بيانَthe clarity of الصِّدقtruth فيin الكَلِمِwords
I would set it upright for you, in plain sight,
so it might be as clear as truth expressed in words.
منfrom أينَwhere أَنْسىI forget أياديكَyour favors الّتيwhich سَلَفَتْwere bestowed before
عنديupon me ولحميَand my flesh منfrom أَفضالهاtheir bounties وَدَميand my blood
How could I forget your favors once bestowed
upon me, when my flesh and blood come from their bounty?
كمhow many مِنَّةٍa favor لكof yours عنديwith me لستُI do not أكفُرُهاdeny it
ونعمةٍand a blessing قدindeed أنافتْhas risen high بيwith me علىabove النِّعَمblessings
How many favors you have done me, which I do not deny,
and blessings that have raised me above other blessings!
لولاكwere it not for you لمdid not يَبْدُemerge شِعْريmy poetry مِنfrom كنانَتِهits quiver
ولاnor سَمَتْrose بيwith me أماليmy hopes ولاnor هِمَميmy aspirations
Without you, my poetry would not have emerged from its quiver,
nor would my hopes or aspirations have borne me aloft.
وَلَمand did not أَرُحْgo about مستقيمَsteady السّعدgood fortune مكتفياhaving enough
أُرَدّدI turn repeatedly الطَّرْفَthe gaze فيover مالٍwealth وفيand over حَشَمattendants
Nor would I have gone about with steady good fortune and all my needs met,
turning my gaze again and again over wealth and attendants.
وكيفand how أَشكرI give thanks for إحْدَىone of ماwhat منَنْتَyou bestowed بهwith it
وقدand indeed رَمانيhas struck me نَدىbounty كفَّيْكَyour two hands بالبَكَمwith muteness
And how can I give thanks for even one favor you have bestowed,
when the bounty of your two hands has struck me dumb?
يَفْدِيكransoms you عبدُكyour servant مّماfrom what بتَّyou spent the night تحذَرُهyou fear it
ياO أكرَمmost noble الناسِpeople فيin الأخلاقcharacter والشَّيمand dispositions
May your servant ransom you from what you have spent the night fearing,
O noblest of people in character and disposition!
