I forsook drinking wine among young men,

not one of whom forsakes wine.

Then one of them said: reviling it

while forsaking it provides no excuse.

And our wine has not yet completed

a month in its jar since being pressed.

    And wine's age, unless

a year has passed over it, counts as no age to us.

And Nowruz has indeed arrived, deeming foolish

anyone it has not found dead drunk.

And I am not wrong to ask for it as a gift—

certainly not, nor am I doing anything blameworthy.

So, by seeking the peerless in glory, I sought refuge

in a stronghold—may it always remain my treasure—

a patron who bestowed some of his bounty on me.

And in my eyes, seeking him is glory enough for me.

So confident hope came ahead of what

I had hoped for, heralding glad tidings.

And the verse followed in its wake,

    offering thanks before the bounty.

How fine are my thanks and my trust in one

from whom I hope for ease to ward off hardship for me.
