أفنيتَyou have spent دهركyour lifetime تَتّقيyou guard against
أفنيتَ دهرك تَتّقي
فيهin it الحوادثthe calamities والمصائبْand the misfortunes
فيه الحوادث والمصائبْ
You have spent your lifetime guarding against
You have spent your lifetime guarding yourself
its mishaps and calamities.
against its calamities and misfortunes.
ولوand had اتّقيتَyou avoided معاصِيacts of disobedience to الرbeginning of 'the All-Merciful'
ولو اتّقيتَ معاصِي الر
حمنcompletion of 'the All-Merciful' فيماin what أنتَyou راكبengaged in
حمن فيما أنتَ راكب
And had you guarded against disobedience to the Mer—
And had you shunned disobedience to
—ciful One in all that you undertake,
the All-Merciful in what you undertake,
لأمِنتَyou would have been safe منfrom نارfire الجحيbeginning of 'Hell'
لأمِنتَ من نار الجحي
مcompletion of 'Hell' وفيand in الحياةlife منfrom النّوائبthe calamities
م وفي الحياة من النّوائب
you would surely have been safe from the fire of Hel—
you would have been safe from the fire of
—l, and from life’s afflictions.
Hell, and from calamities in life.
إنif لمnot تُراقِبyou heed منthe one who لهto him belongs
إن لم تُراقِب من له
حكمٌauthority عليكover you فمنthen whom تُراقِبyou heed
حكمٌ عليك فمن تُراقِب
If you do not heed the One who holds
If you do not heed Him who has
judgment over you, whom then do you heed?
authority over you, whom do you heed?
