    A waterwheel moaned love's lament,

when it complained of the heat of its troubled thoughts.

Its groaning is the creak of its turning,

and its tears are the water of its buckets.

As though the jars in its well

were kings' heads in their sarcophagi.

It flings water into a garden,

as though it were the plumage of its peacocks.

As though the cypresses there were women

who had risen to strike their bells.

And the poppies around it are taken for

a hand gesturing with its pins.

And the narcissus opened to reveal eyes

with pupils yellowed by their misery.

And chrysanthemums like the mouths of oryxes,

parted in smiles after their frowning.

And irises like a pinch, when there appeared

its marks upon their soft surface.

The rain awakened them with its dew,

when the clouds scattered it from their purse.

Its blossoms toy with the eyes,

as hopes toy with their paupers.

So go to its basil and rest

for wine beneath the spreading tree of its familiar haunt.

And bring it: hidden from the senses is what

the delicacy of its perceptible substance has brought.

As though the cupbearer, when he hastens its flow,

kindles the flash of lightning in its cups.
