ورُحتُand I went وماليand my wealth فيهin it غيرُnot مَصُونِprotected
I confined my revelry to the monastery of al-Qusayr,
I shortened my stay at the small monastery,
And I went, my wealth there left unprotected.
And left without anything of mine being safeguarded.
وكانتand there were بهin it للرّاحto wine عِنديowed by me وللصِّباand to youthful passion
ديونٌdebts فلمand did not أَمطُلْI delay قضاءpaying دُيونيmy debts
There, to wine and youthful passion, I owed
It was to me a place for comfort and youthfulness,
Debts, and did not delay paying my debts.
With debts I did not hesitate to repay.
إذاwhenever بكّرrang early الناقوسُthe bell باكَرْتُI undertook early شُرْبهَاdrinking it

Whenever the bell rang early, I drank the wine early,
When the bell rang early I was quick to drink,
And my faith differed from the faiths of the bells.
And my faith differed from the bells' religions.

وترِجيعِand the resounding of أوتارٍstrings ولحظِand the glances of عُيونِeyes
And I lay stricken between a cup of wine
I lay intoxicated among cups of wine,
And the strains of strings and the glances of eyes.
The plucking of strings, and the glances of eyes.
وَلمand did not تَهتِكِtear اللّذاتُthe pleasures سِترَthe veil of مُرُوءتيmy honor

Yet pleasures did not tear the veil of my honor,
Pleasures did not rend the veil of my integrity,
Nor did sins there corrupt my certainty.
Nor did sins therein corrupt my certainty.
