Say to the Imam, Muʿizz, exalter of Muhammad’s faith
Tell the Imam Mu'izz ad-Din Muhammad,
with Samharī spears and the cleaving sword:
With the sword of Samhariyya and the piercing blade,
إنif كانwas قدindeed عظُمتْgrew great ذنوبيmy sins وانتهتand brought
بيwith me فوقbeyond مِقدارthe measure of الذنوبsins جرائريmy offenses
If my sins have indeed grown great, and
That if my sins have become great and my crimes
my offenses have borne me beyond the measure of sins,
Have exceeded the limit of sins, enormities,
فأقلُّthen the least ماwhat تحويهencompasses it عفوكyour pardon واسِعvast

then the least of what your pardon holds is vast,
The least that your forgiveness contains is so vast
a breadth whose smallest part encompasses my grave sins.
That its little surrounds my major sins,
واللهby God ماnot بقيتremained خطاياthe sins of تائبٍa penitent
يوماًa day ولاnor حسنتwas fitting عقوبةpunishment by قادرone with power
By God, a penitent’s sins have never lingered
By Allah, the sins of a repentant person never remain
a single day, nor has punishment befitted one with power.
Nor does the punishment of the Capable bring goodness.

والذنبand sin يُظهرreveals فضلthe virtue of عفوthe pardon of القادرthe powerful one
My excuse is deliberate, and my sin is heedlessness;
My excuse for intentional sins is absentmindedness
and sin reveals the virtue of the powerful one’s pardon.
And the sin reveals the grace of the forgiveness of the Capable.

I have indeed taken upon myself a sin attributed to
I have confessed to a sin attributed openly to me
my open speech, though it never dwelt in the knots of my secret thoughts.
Which did not reside in the knots of my conscience.

No—by Him who raised your station to the heights
No, by Him who elevated your status in the highest,
and endowed you with lofty, dazzling honor—
And granted you the magnificent, lofty nobility,

my mind did not guide my action toward it, nor
My mind did not lead me to it intentionally
did the foot of desire tread there in my thoughts.
Nor did the foot of death's approach occur in my thoughts.

I would have exposed the envier’s embellishment of its falsehood,
I would expose the slander of the envious against me
and the slanderer’s tale and the traitor’s treachery.
And the gossip of the slanderer and the betrayal of the betrayer.
