صَبْرُ المحبّ أحقُّ بالإحْجامِ
والشوقُand longing أَولَىmore suited منهthan it بالإقدامِto bold advance
والشوقُ أَولَى منه بالإقدامِ
A lover's patience is fitter for restraint,
The patience of the lover is more deserving of restraint,
And longing is fitter than it for bold advance.
While yearning is more worthy than it of resolve.

Flowing tears have banished sleep, as though
Sorrow prevented a tear that overflowed as though
My two eyes had scattered through them a strand of beads.
The eyes had scattered with it the beads of a necklace.

And yearning, filling the heart, is made
And youthful folly fills my heart, increasing
More fiery within me by the faultfinders' reproach.
The flames against me of blamers' reproaches.

مَلّكن كلَّ حَشيً لكلّ غَرامِ
Indeed, the women in litters, that day on the sands of ʿĀlij,
Verily the slender ones, the day of high sand dunes,
Gave every heart over to every passion.
Rule every love-sick soul for every passion.

They revealed through gaps in the curtains eyes
They revealed from behind the curtains flushed cheeks
Kohl-lined with beauty and languor.
Influenced by coquetry and sickness.

فبعثْنَه بإشارةِ الإبهام
They wished to give a greeting, but feared a watcher,
They perplexed me until I swooned as if I were
So sent it with a gesture of the thumb.
A victim of love, a victim of wine.

And smiled, revealing dark-lipped mouths with pearly, lustrous teeth,
If I believed in transmigration in the world
And unveiled faces like the sun beneath darkness.
I would think I was once ‘Urwah ibn Hizam.

Supple women, their cheeks like crimson anemones,
I met them in the rain, lined up like pearls
And their eyes like those of white gazelles with fawns.
With the clouds' tears spreading to string them together.

They bewildered me until I seemed,
I tested them, youths of glorious Hashim,
Though felled by love, to be felled by wine.
Proud of face, generous and noble.

لحِسبتُ أنّي عروةُ بنُ حِزام
If I believed in the transmigration of souls among humankind,
They incline not to insult or spite
I would have thought myself ʿUrwa ibn Ḥizām.
But to the dew and hopes of dreams.

And a meadow blessed with rain, whose blossoms were arrayed
They compete for the best conversation and its text
By the clouds' tears, setting paired blossoms apart.

I drank aged wine there at dawn with young men
Serious or jesting, entertaining and courteous
Of Hāshim, proud-nosed and noble.
In every art and goodness of companionship.

They know no way to insults or obscenity,
Knights of the first words, when they rode
But to generosity and weighty judgment.
The lines of speech, riders of the pens.

They exchange the fruits of conversation and its very wording,
I entertained them with cups since the dawn dispersed
With the most trenchant delivery and pleasing words,
The darkness of night.

Until I saw the sun declining and it had
In every art and fine convivial companionship.
Inclined like the slant of an unveiled cheek.

Knights of virgin speech, when they mount
And the star was urging on the crescent like the palm
The ranks of discourse, they are knights of the pen.
Of its outstretched hand bidding it peace.

I passed them its cups from the moment
Of everything I have enjoyed the pleasures
Morning's hand dispelled the murk of darkness,
Except for spite and the disgraces of sins.

Oh companion! Time has returned in its beauty
Swaying like a shy maiden toward her veil.
And the softness of cheerful days flows back.

And the star urges the crescent onward, like a palm
And I see the caliphate since the mighty sword protected it
Whose fingertips gesture toward it in greeting.
Has protected the glorious banners.

In everything I have satisfied my desire,
A king who excels in supremacy and who alone
Except obscenity and the vile deeds of sin.
Suffices for favor and grace.

O friend, time has returned in its beauty,
Not lazily withdrawing from the enemy out of luxury,
And the gentle gladness of the days has returned.

And I see the caliphate, since its precincts were defended
Always exerting himself for the caliphate
By al-ʿAzīz's sword, mighty in its banners.
And protecting the Guardian whatever he fears.

O Caliph of God! Guidance has appeared
Are his two hands in bounty and beneficence.
In his time and justice in the laws.

You always see him warding from the caliphate
By giving me as heir to the Muslims Muhammad,
What it fears, and defending the loyal ally.
And the trusted one for annulment and command.

O Caliph of God, under whom guidance appeared
You have raised my status through him
In his age, and justice in judgments:
And clarified to the people the pact of my office.

Through Muḥammad, heir apparent to the Muslims,
Prophetic wisdom and ‘Alawi caution
And the one looked to for untying and binding.
Such as no imam has possessed before.

You handed him to me, raising my rank through him,
I did not think before this that I would strive
And making plain to the people my bond of protection.
With a morning sun or a perfect full moon.

You have burdened me with the lofty when you burdened me with him
Noble in resolve, unhesitating in bold advance,
Until through him I have become great beyond compare.

Now I have met misfortunes, fighting,
Of ʿAlī, never before united in an imam.
And learned that I am the best of uncles.

Would walk with a morning sun and a full moon.
Sincere affection and the utmost honor.

And one like you has risen to every virtue
Till, through him, I rose beyond all exaltation.
And saw the tilt of affection to relatives.

If your choice has favored me, I see that without them
And learned that I am the best of uncles.
I find through you my protection.

Pure affection and the utmost honor.
