وسُقمٌ بدا ما بين جفنِيك أم سِحْرٌ
Has an arrow struck the heart, or your sidelong glance?
Were the arrows that struck my heart your glance, or just illusion?
And is what appears between your eyelids sickness, or magic?
Was the sickness that appeared between your eyelids magic or spell?

And what is that gleaming on the surface of your cheek?
And what is this brightness on the platter of your cheek?
Is it beauty's water coursing there, or wine?
Water of beauty pouring, or is it wine?

You unveiled and sent the darkness roaming before its dawn;
You traveled and wandered the darkness before dawn.
Has a sun shone from your veil, or a full moon?
A sun shining from your veil, or is it the full moon?

Your eyes have indeed intoxicated your figure, so it swayed,
Indeed your eyes intoxicated your stature, so it swayed
as drunkenness makes a tipsy drinker sway.
As the drunk sways with the wine’s inebriation

And you burdened me with love I cannot bear,
And you burdened me with a love I cannot bear
just as your waist could not bear the weight of your hips.
As your slender waist could not bear that burden

Do you oppress lovers, while justice is manifest,
You were unjust to lovers, though justice is clear
and wrong them, while truth's stars are radiant?
And unjust, though the truth’s star is shining bright

Do you not fear al-Aziz? Ever since the rise of
Do you not fear the Almighty, since his caliphate appeared
his caliphate, no tyranny or treachery has remained.
No injustice remains, no treachery or plight

Pray I recover from my love sickness for you, like
Egypt quenched her burning thirst through Abu al-Mansur.
Egypt recovered from its sickness through Abu Mansur

The world rejoiced in him and in his reign,
You brought felicity back to the world through him
and Time restored to the days their joy.
And his rule brought joy back to the ages

May your arrival, surrounded by fortune and glory, bring you joy,
There was an arrival shrouded in fortune and glory
and victory spread over it the might of its dominion.
His mighty reign and victory encircled it

You returned, having accomplished what had never been accomplished
You returned after accomplishing what no imam accomplished
by an imam, and feats whose like no age had witnessed,
Nor did anyone like you in any age

With the conquest of East and West singing your praises
the world sings, and travelers chant on their way.
The world sings your praises and poetry chants your deeds

For if Badr has never been compared with its equal,
For you are a full moon that none can equal
then this mighty battle has Badr as its counterpart.
And that great battle resembles you like the full moon

You championed divine unity and truth through it with a victory
You supported the oneness of God and truth triumphantly
of al-Aziz, before which glory and pride bowed in prayer.
A glorious victory that majesty and pride prayed for

You terrified the people of Syria until you left them

With no refuge but you, openly or in secret

If the dead could hear, I would call out, making my voice heard,
If the dead could hear I would call out loudly
to Yazid, to his shame: 'Rise, for vengeance has been exacted!'
"Rise in disgrace, O Yazid, for fate has caught up"

I rose to avenge al-Husayn and his Zayd,
I rose to avenge al-Husayn and Zayd
a rising through which Zaynab's breast was healed.
With a resolve like Zaynab’s which healed my heart

So Fatima al-Zahra ransoms you, O her son,
Fatima al-Zahra will ransom you, O her son
and asks that you endure, and that life endure for you.
And prays you live long with enduring days

You are the sword of God, striking with Him

may the people you surpassed and towered above be your ransom,
Whenever they count the Umayyads or rocks
whose father, when they reckon their descent, is Umayya or Sakhr.
Their father if they miss you or become distressed

When I compose poetry praising you
verse and prose help me in praising you.
My prose and poetry aid me in your eulogy

We both come from one root and one place of growth;
We both come from one origin and source
our two branches sprang forth, and the stock did not differ.
Our branches diverged but the roots are one

So, O one whose eminence is mine, though I am his servant,
O you whose high rank is a shelter I seek
and one whose half I am when lineage is traced,
Though I am but your servant in lineage and birth

Your conscience welcomes me with pure affection
and the cheer your face shows me never ends.
Your face's glad tidings for me never cease

So if I speak at length in proclaiming your excellence,
If my spreading of your virtues grows excessive
for your excellence is an excellence no account can encompass.
Your exceeding virtues cannot be contained

I congratulate none but you with an ode
as though you were a necklace, and your return the neck beneath it.
As if you were a necklace and it a pearl

If the land shook with longing and came to you
to you in yearning the land of your Egypt and the palace.
Yearning, your Egypt and your palace would arrive
