I sent it to mirror you in some of what

longing to see us has clothed you in.

Yet with its fragrant breaths it offers

you our mornings and our evenings.

Tell, O water-lily among plants, of

my affection to someone through your fragrance.

And tell him: May no circumstance prosper

that keeps you from meeting us.

No creature has adorned the days as

you have adorned them with beauty and kindness.

    Were generosity folded up, then

your palm would be the superscription on its folds.

It is as though you had seen generosity,

while people had become blind to it.

You followed our virtues in doing good,

and sought our path in your conduct.

May whoever severed our bond not be

among the living—may he be no more!
