كتبتُI wrote ولوand if قَدَرْتُI could بقدرin proportion to شوقيmy longing
كتبتُ ولو قَدَرْتُ بقدر شوقي
لأفنيتُI would have exhausted القراطِسَthe sheets of paper والمِداداand the ink
لأفنيتُ القراطِسَ والمِدادا
I wrote; had I been able to write in proportion to my longing,
I would write as much as my longing allowed
I would have exhausted the paper and the ink.
Exhausting all pens and ink,
ولكنّيbut I اقتصرتُI confined myself علىto سلامٍa greeting
ولكنّي اقتصرتُ على سلامٍ
يذكّركreminds you الولايَةloyalty والوداداand affection
يذكّرك الولايَة والودادا
But I confined myself to a greeting
But I sufficed with a greeting
That reminds you of loyalty and affection.
That reminds you of loyalty and affection
