This is what I wish for.

For this which I wish for

قبّلْتُ مَنْ كنتُ صبًّا

به كئيباً معنّى

I kissed the one I had been lovesick

I kissed whom I was raging with love for

for, sorrowful and tormented.

Saddened, giving meaning to melancholy

فكدتُ أفِنيه بالضَّ

فكدتُ أفِنيه بالضَّ

ضمّ والعِناق وأَفنَى

ضمّ والعِناق وأَفنَى

So I nearly consumed him with

I almost destroyed him with clasping

clasping and embracing, and nearly perished myself.

And embracing, and he destroyed me

جنَيْتُ باللَّثْمِ منه

جنَيْتُ باللَّثْمِ منه

ما كان باللّحظ يُجنَى

ما كان باللّحظ يُجنَى

I reaped from him through kissing

I attained from his kiss

what used to be reaped through glances.

What could not be attained in a glance

قل للعذول على ما

قل للعذول على ما

حَقّي به أن أُهنّا

حَقّي به أن أُهنّا

Tell the one who reproaches me for what

Say to the blamer over what

I deserve to be congratulated for:

Is my right with him to be blamed

لا نِلْتَ ما كان منه

لا نِلْتَ ما كان منه

يومَ الوصال ومِنّا

يومَ الوصال ومِنّا

May you never experience what passed between him

You have not attained what was from him

and us on the day of union.
