يومُthe day الفراقparting أهاجstirred up ليin me حُرَقاًburning pangs
وشفىand healed الفؤادَthe heart وسكَّنَand soothed الأرقاsleeplessness
The day of parting stirred burning pangs in me,
The day we parted kindled in me a blaze,
And healed my heart and soothed my sleeplessness.
Yet it soothed my heart and calmed my restless nights.
قَبَّلْتُI kissed مَنthe one whom أَهْوَىI love برَغْمِهِمagainst their will
فيin الجهرthe open لاnot خَلْساًfurtively ولاand not سَرَقاby stealth
I kissed the one I love against their will,
I kissed the one I love despite their protests,
In the open—not furtively, nor by stealth.
Openly, not in secret or by stealth.
وأَرَيتُهُمْand I showed them أنّيthat I أُوَدِّعُهُمْI bid them farewell
وشرِبتُand I drank قهوةَthe wine خَدّهof his cheek دَفَقاin a torrent
And I showed them that I was bidding them farewell,
I showed them I was bidding them farewell,
And drank the wine of his cheek in a torrent.
And drank the coffee of their cheek in gulps.
لولاwere it not for التوادُعُmutual leave-taking ياO مليحةُlovely one ماnot
قَبَّلْتُI kissed وجْهَكِyour face خمسةًfive times نَسَقاin succession
Had it not been for leave-taking, O lovely one, I would not
If not for the farewells, O beautiful one,
have kissed your face five times in succession.
I'd not have kissed your face fifty times over.
