أَماdo ... not? تَرَىyou see الرعدَthe thunder بكَىwept فاشْتَكَىthen complained
والبرقand the lightning قدindeed أومضflashed فاستضحكاthen burst into laughter
Do you not see that thunder wept and then complained,
The thunder wept and complained
and lightning flashed, then burst into laughter?
While the lightning blinked and laughed
فاشربso drink علىin the presence of غَيْمa cloud كَصِبْغِlike the dye of الدجىnight's darkness
أضحكَmade laugh وجهَthe face of الأرضَِthe earth لمّاwhen بكىit wept
So drink beneath a cloud like the dye of night,
So drink from a cloud like the dye of dusk
which made the earth's face laugh when it wept.
Laugh and cheer the face of the earth when it cries
وقدand indeed حكَىimitated العودُthe oud أَنِينَthe moaning of الهوىlove
لكِنّهbut it جوّدexcelled فيماin what حكىit imitated
And the oud has echoed the moaning of love,
The lute told the tale of passion
but excelled in what it echoed.
Yet it was generous in what it recounted
وانظرand look لماءِat the water of النيلِthe Nile فيin مدّهِits swelling
كأنماas though صُنْدِلwas scented with sandalwood أوor مُسِّكاwas scented with musk
And look at the Nile's water as it swells,
And see the Nile water in its flood
as though scented with sandalwood or musk.
As if it were musk or aloeswood

And take it—it resembles the thoughts of the one
And here it resembles the thought of one
who composed it in his words, or portrayed it.
Who strung it in words or recounted
