Indeed, I came to the garden by choice,

But in departing from it, I had no choice.

And how could I choose distance from a place of glory,

When my pride in it endures, having spread among the people?

But a day passed that I had hoped would be

A light for my eye; instead, it brought my two hearts fire.

And I had no lodging there available to me,

So I rose dejected, my desires unfulfilled.

And the whole company said just what I had said:

We say that openly and in secret.

And you will be fined ten, so that through it you may count as

A tenth of our excuse for the fault, in the fine.

So make ready our excuse, you two—may I go before you both.

For we have not stubbornly persisted in staying away.

And we shall be with you both before midmorning on

Monday—or earlier, in the brightening dawn.
