يضيقfalls short عنof الجوابa reply مَدَىthe reach of ذِراعيmy arm
I turned from speaking to listening;
I turned from prose to listening,
The reach of my arm falls short of a reply.
My arms are too short to answer.
أمِيريmy prince ظلتI have remained فيamid نِعَمٍblessings جِسامٍimmense
رِتاعlush pastures أوor شبيهاتِthings resembling الرِتاعlush pastures
My prince, I have dwelt amid immense blessings—
My prince remained in immense blessings,
Lush pastures, or the like of lush pastures.
Like a lamb or something like a lamb.
أعهدِيis my pledge كالسرابlike a mirage لدىamid الموامِيdesert wastes
وقَطْرُand the rain of مودَّتيmy affection حِلْفa sworn ally of انقشاعdispersal
Is my pledge like a mirage amid the desert wastes,
My covenants are like mirages in the dunes,
And the rain of my affection pledged to vanish,
And a drop of my love is like a fleeting alliance.
إذَاif أبتِrefuse الليالِيthe nights أنto تُرينيshow me
عدوّيmy enemy نهبprey for عاديةthe marauding pack of الضباعhyenas
If the nights refuse to show me
If the nights refuse to show me
My enemy as prey for marauding hyenas?
My enemy plundering the settlements of hyenas,
ولمand did not أقلI say السباعthe beasts of prey لضنّbecause of the grudgingness of نفسيmy soul
عليهto him بالجريءwith the bold one منamong السباعthe beasts of prey
Nor did I say 'beasts of prey,' for my soul begrudges
And I did not say hyenas out of stinginess,
Him the bold one among beasts of prey.
I am as bold with it as the hyenas.
عتبتَyou reproached عليّme ياO ترْبَpeer of المعاليlofty honors
لتأخِيريfor my delaying موالاةَthe succession of الرِقاعِletters
You reproached me, O peer of lofty honors,
You blamed me, O soil of glories,
For my delay in sending successive letters.
For my late allegiance to the penniless.
وعادتُكand your custom التيwhich سلفتwas shown before إِليناto us
ستُنسُبنيwill credit me إلىwith حُسْنgoodness of الطِباعcharacter
And your custom, long shown toward us,
And your habit which you lent us
Will credit me with goodness of character.
Will attribute me to goodness of disposition.

وأسْلكand I tread بعدُafterward فيalong النَهْجthe path الوَسَاعspacious
Are you not the first to offer verse unbidden,
Am I not the one who began poetry with pardon
While I then tread the spacious path?
And I follow after the vast method?
لكُمyours is فضلُthe merit of التقدّمtaking the lead فيهin it قبليbefore me
وليand mine is منfrom بعدكمafter you فضلُthe merit of اتّباعfollowing
Yours is the merit of preceding me in it,
You have the merit of preceding me in it
And mine, after you, the merit of following.
And I after you have the merit of following.
وأينand where البحرُthe sea حينwhen يفيضoverflows فضلاًbounty
عليَّupon me منcompared with الجداولstreams والتِراعand canals
And how can the sea, when it pours its bounty
And where is the sea when it overflows
Upon me, be compared with streams and canals?
Upon me from the streams and channels?
أقولI say لِنفسto the soul of منwhoever يَهْوَىcherishes وداديmy affection
قَرِىrest at ease وتيقَّنيand be certain أنthat لنwill not تراعيbe frightened
I say to the soul of whoever cherishes my affection:
I say to a soul who loves my affection
Rest at ease, and be certain you will not be frightened.
Be content and convince me that you will not neglect me.
يودِّعbids farewell يَذْبُلٌYadhbul وحِراًand Hira ورَضْوَىand Radwa
وعهديyet my pledge لاdoes not يميلincline إلىtoward الوداعfarewell
Yadhbul, Hira, and Radwa may bid farewell,
A withering, burning, and pleased farewell
Yet my pledge does not incline toward farewell.
And my covenant does not tend towards farewell.
فكيفhow, then لسيِّدfor a lord جلَّتwere great لديناin our eyes
لهhe has نعمٌfavors كأمثالlike the likenesses of القلاعfortresses
How, then, could I forsake a lord whose great favors to us
So how can it be for a master whom
Are like so many fortresses?
We have glories around like fortresses,
عُلُوٌّloftiness تحسِرfall back exhausted الأبصارُthe eyes عنهfrom it
ونورٌand a light مثلlike تنويرthe radiance of الشعاعrays
A loftiness from which eyes fall back exhausted,
Sublimity that sights are puzzled by him
And a light like the radiance of rays.
And light like the illumination of beams?

As the weak stalks of plants sway.
