ماnot ذمّcondemned يومَthe day of الفِراقِparting إلاexcept
مَنone who غابwas absent عنfrom موقِفِthe scene of الفِراقِparting
None has condemned the day of parting except
He who was absent from parting's place
One who was absent from the scene of parting.
Has not blamed the day of parting

لِلّثمfor kissing والضمّand clasping والعِناقِand embracing
It begins with us standing
Its beginning is that we stand
For kissing, clasping, and embracing.
For kissing, embracing and pressing together

ولاnor ندارِيwe placate ذوِيthose possessed of النفاقِhypocrisy
There we do not fear a talebearer's gaze,
We do not there beware a watchful eye
Nor do we placate the hypocrites.
Nor avoid the hypocrites
إنif هاجَstirred حَرُّthe heat of الوَداعِfarewell شَوقيmy longing
فبالوداعِthen through farewell اشْتَفيfound relief اشتياقيmy yearning
If the heat of farewell stirs my longing,
If the heat of farewell excites my passion
Then through farewell my yearning finds relief.
Then by farewell my yearning is quenched

والبينُand separation ماnot أَمكنَwas possible التّلاقيmeeting one another
Were it not for the parting that befell us
If not for the separation that afflicted us
And separation, meeting would not have been possible.
And the distance that prevented union
