ولَوْذَعيَّتُهand his keen wit جهراًopenly وإسراراand privately
You have done well, like one with perfect discernment
You have done a kindness whose perfection was fulfilled
And keen wit, in public and in private.
Whether you proclaimed it openly or in secret
كانwas انصرافكyour departure عنَّاfrom us علَّةًa cause قدحتْkindled
فيin كلevery حبَّةcore of قلبٍa heart عندناamong us ناراa fire
Your departure from us was a cause that kindled
Your withdrawal from us was a reason that ignited
A fire in the core of every heart among us.
In every heart we have a fire
ولمand did not تَزلcease to be منbecause of نواكyour absence النفسthe soul والهةًdistraught with longing

And at your absence, the soul remained distraught with longing,
And you did not cease to inspire the soul and make it infatuated
And the heart downcast, and the tears streaming,
With a grieving heart and flowing tears

حُرّاًas a noble man يقودhe leads إلىto اللذَّاتpleasures أحراراnoble men
Until you promised to come in merriment,
Until you promised to come in a state of joy
A noble man leading noble men to pleasures.
A free man leading to pleasures the free

And come in haste on Monday, in the forenoon;
Come the two mornings quickly
So acts the generous man: if not invited, he visits.
Thus the generous man if he is not lazy to visit

There are indeed abodes the rain watered at daybreak,
The rain on four generous ladies has begun falling
Until it clothed them in flowers and blossoms.
Until it covered them with flowers and lights

Their branches sway beneath the east wind in supple grace
Under the youth their branches bend
And softness, while birds call gently to other birds.
With blessing and birds sing all together

Unsealed musk, scattered there, sends forth its fragrance,
The pure musk spreads its fragrance
And ambergris from al-Shihr, at evening and before dawn.
And the amber of trees exudes aromas and essences
وقدand indeed رضِيتكُمُI have chosen you شَرْباًas drinking companions بهاin them ولهاand for them

And I have chosen you as drinking companions in them and for them,
And I accepted you to drink in it and by it
Just as I long ago chose them as a home for you.
As I have accepted it for you as an abode
فأعطواso give التذاكرreminiscence والصَّهباءand tawny wine حقّهماthe due of both
فيهاin them وقَضُّواand fulfill منfrom اللذّاتpleasures أوطاراdesires

So give reminiscence and tawny wine their due
So give the tickets and the blond what is their right
There, and satisfy your desires for pleasure.
In it and fulfill from the pleasures many rounds
