أتَاحَbrought لمقلتيto my eye السَّهَرَاsleeplessness
وجارَand acted unjustly عليّagainst me واقتَدَرَاand wielded power
He brought sleeplessness to my eye,
Sleeplessness has granted my words
And wronged me and held sway.
Free rein as they flow and take shape
غزالٌa gazelle لوif جرىpassed نَفسيmy breath
عليهover him لذابhe would melt وانفَطَراand split apart
A gazelle—if my breath passed
A gazelle, had it been my soul
Over him, he would melt and split apart.
Would have melted and burst from pain
ولكنand yet عينُهhis eye حشدتgathered
ليّfor me الغُنْجَcoy charm والحَوَراand striking contrast between dark irises and white eyes
And yet his eye gathered
But his eyes gathered for me
For me, coy charm and the beauty of dark eyes.
Bashfulness, confusion and love
ومحمدand Muhammad أودىbrought to ruin بهhim قمرٌa moon
فكيفso how يعاقِبhe punishes القمراthe moon
And Muhammad—a moon has undone him;
Muhammad was smitten by a moon
So how can he punish the moon?
So how can he punish the moon?
