O you who cherished my affection and drew me near

In loving union, and never thought of abandoning me,

When can I repay him for some of

His sincere love for me and the kindness he has shown me?

Or how can I recompense the one who

Angered those who envy me and pleased me?

By God, may I never cease offering him

My heart in love, and my body.

May I never gain my wish from him unless

My secret love for him matches my open avowal.

A full moon in the darkness, its radiance shining,

Set upon a bough of the bān tree.

He keeps defying, on my account, whoever has begun

To reproach him for love and reproach me.

So I do not speak of him in the words of one

Who is content with love of many hues.

May I be a ransom for the one who turned away, until at last

Fearing for my heart, he sought to appease me.
