Nothing has ever erased guilt from those who commit it

    like apology and confession.

We accepted your sincere apology when

you came begging for a healing pardon.

And we pardoned a lapse that had not been

intended by you, nor arisen from dissent.

Indeed, my knowledge of your pure affection suffices

to spare you an apology; in my eyes it is enough.

Yet the wise man is one who does not sleep through

the ambiguities of affairs and disagreements.

The rule for one who puts alertness first is to

go forth with sound judgment and clear thought.

Had your fault arisen from anything but inadvertence,

we would have accepted fairness and redress.

We know you are sincere, one who keeps faith

in absence, a loyal and devoted friend.

With me—so let your eyes find comfort—you have such

standing as no rhymes of mine can measure.

My support for you this morning is not far

from you, nor has my loyal care faded.

How often we made your foes drink before the Imam,

the just, when they found fault, a deadly poison!

And we clothed your two wings in feathers when

they were bare of primary and secondary flight feathers.

And for the kindness, on your behalf I give myself

thanks and praise, reward and repayment.

Indeed, I look upon you with the eyes

of one whose affection is pure as the choicest wine.

And I tend your well-being, so that

I do not see its plant quickly dry out.
