أُلاقيI suffer مِنَof الأرزاءِcalamities وهْوand it is جليلُgrievous
And one who marvels at my long endurance of what
He is surprised at my patience with
I suffer—grievous calamities—
The great troubles I encounter

منof الضَّرْبblows عضبُa keen sword الشَّفْرَتَينthe two edges صقِيلpolished
Says, 'Will you not complain?' I said, 'When has
He says, why don't you complain? I said, when does
A polished sword, sharp on both edges, complained of blows?'
The blade complain of being sharpened?
وإنّand indeed أمرأًa man يشكوcomplains إلىto غيرِone who is not نافعٍhelpful
ويَسْخوand gives freely بماof what فِيin نَفْسِهِhis soul لجهولis surely a fool
And surely a man who complains to one who cannot help
A man who complains to one who cannot help
And freely reveals what is within him is truly a fool.
And shares what is in his soul with fools
عَدَانيkept me away عنfrom الشكوَىcomplaining إلىto الناسpeople أَنَّنيthat I
عليلٌailing ومَنْand whoever أَشكوI complain إليهto him علِيلailing
What has kept me from complaining to people is that I
My troubles have stopped me complaining to people
Am ailing, and whoever I complain to is ailing.
Since I am sick, and who can I complain to?
ويمنعنيand prevents me الشكوىcomplaining إلىto اللهGod عِلْمُهُHis knowledge
بجُمْلةof all ماwhat ألقاهI encounter it قبلَbefore أَقُولI speak
And what keeps me from complaining to God is His knowledge
Knowing everything before I speak
Of all that I suffer before I speak.
Stops me complaining to God
سأسكُتI shall be silent صبراًin patience واحْتساباًand seeking God's reward فإنّنيfor indeed I
أَرىI see الصبرَpatience سيفاًas a sword ليسthere are no فيهin it فلولnotches
I shall be silent, in patience and hope of God's reward, for I
I will stay silent with patience and acceptance
See patience as a sword with no notches.
For I see patience as an unbroken sword
