Concerning him, my heart has not heeded the admonisher’s
The heart heard no prohibition from the warner,
rebuke, nor turned away from him in forgetfulness.
Nor did it become diverted by the distractor.

He amuses himself whenever I complain, distracted
It plays when I complain of one preoccupied
from me, while my heart is never heedless of him.
With other than me, though the heart is not neglectful of him.
واللهby God لاnot قلتُI will say فيin هوايَmy love لهto him
لكيso that أستريحI find relief فيin آهa sigh
By God, in my love I will not say to him
By God, I'd say to the one I love,
“Ah!” so that I might find relief in a sigh.
"Ah," just to find some rest in "Ah."
فليُزْهَso let him be proud وليَسْتَطِلand let him lord it عليَّover me فماfor … not

أعشَقI love passionately إلاّexcept الظَّلومَthe cruel one والزّاهيand the proud one
So let him be proud and lord it over me, for
So let him be unjust and drag it out with me -
I love none but the cruel and the proud.
I love none but the oppressor and the procrastinator.

It is as though his eye were unsheathing
It's as though his eye were a bare sword
against me the sword of al-Aziz Billah,
Upon me - the Almighty's sword!
