أَلا إِنَّ لَيلى لا يُرامُ حَديثُها

كَبيضِ الأُنوقِ لا تَرى لَهُ مَطمَعا

كَبيضِ الأُنوقِ لا تَرى لَهُ مَطمَعا

Lo, Layla’s conversation lies beyond all reach—

Behold, Layla’s conversation is beyond reach,

like the anūq-bird’s eggs: no hope of attaining it can be seen.

like the vulture’s eggs—you see no hope of obtaining it.

وَهُم صَلَبوا العَبديَّ في جَذعِ نَخلَةٍ

وَهُم صَلَبوا العَبديَّ في جَذعِ نَخلَةٍ

فَلا عَطَسَت شَيبانُ إِلاّ بَأَجدَعا

فَلا عَطَسَت شَيبانُ إِلاّ بَأَجدَعا

It was they who crucified the man of ʿAbd al-Qays on a date-palm trunk;

And they crucified al-Abdi on the trunk of a palm tree,

so may Shaybān never sneeze save through a severed nose!

so may Shayban never sneeze except through a mutilated nose.

أَهَبَّت بِغُرِّ الآبِداتِ فَراجَعَت

طَريقاً أَمَّلَّتهُ القَصائِدُ مَهيعا

طَريقاً أَمَّلَّتهُ القَصائِدُ مَهيعا

I summoned the bright, untamed rarities, and they retraced

She roused the brightest of the wild verses, and they returned

a broad road the odes had worn smooth.

to a broad, open path the odes had trodden.
