أَرىI see آلَthe house of يُربوعٍYarbuʿ وَأَفناءَand the clans of مالِكٍMalik
أَرى آلَ يُربوعٍ وَأَفناءَ مالِكٍ
أَعضُّوكَthey made you bite فيin الحَربِwar الحَديدِthe iron المُنَقَّباperforated
أَعضُّوكَ في الحَربِ الحَديدِ المُنَقَّبا
I see the house of Yarbuʿ and the clans of Malik
I see the tribe of Yarbou' and the estates of Malik
have made you bite the perforated iron in war.
They attack you in war with honed iron
هُمُthey رَفعواthey lifted فَأسَthe spike of اللِجامِthe bridle فَأَدرَكَتand it reached
هُمُ رَفعوا فَأسَ اللِجامِ فَأَدرَكَت
لِهاتَكَyour uvula حَتّىuntil لَمdid not تَدعleave لَكَfor you مَشرَباa passage for drinking
لِهاتَكَ حَتّى لَم تَدع لَكَ مَشرَبا
They lifted the bridle's spike, and it reached
They raised the axe of dissolution but your blows
your uvula, leaving you no way to drink.
Prevailed over them and left them no drink
فَإِنso if عُدتَyou return عادواthey will return بِالَّتيwith that which لَيسَthere is not فَوقَهاbeyond it
فَإِن عُدتَ عادوا بِالَّتي لَيسَ فَوقَها
مِنَof الشَرِّevil إِلاّexcept أَنthat تَبيتَyou spend the night مُحَجَّباkept behind a veil
مِنَ الشَرِّ إِلاّ أَن تَبيتَ مُحَجَّبا
So if you return, they will return with something surpassed
If you return, they will retaliate in ways
in evil only by your spending the night behind a veil,
Worse than you can imagine, beyond description
وَتُصبِحand you spend the morning تُدريyou comb الكُعكَبِيَّةَthe tuft of hair قاعِداseated
وَتُصبِح تُدري الكُعكَبِيَّةَ قاعِدا
وَيُنتَفَand is plucked out مِنfrom ليتيكَboth sides of your neck ماwhatever كانَwas أَزغَباdowny
وَيُنتَفَ مِن ليتيكَ ما كانَ أَزغَبا
and sitting at dawn, combing your tuft of hair,
You will wake to find yourself sitting confined
while the down is plucked from both sides of your neck.
With your splendor stripped bare of its glow
فَهَلso, did...? سَأَلواthey asked فيناconcerning us سَواءَother than الَّذيthat which لَهُمis theirs
فَهَل سَأَلوا فينا سَواءَ الَّذي لَهُم
وَهَلand did...? نَحنُwe أَعطَيناwe gave سِواهُother than it فَتَعجَباso that you should marvel
وَهَل نَحنُ أَعطَينا سِواهُ فَتَعجَبا
So did they ask of us anything other than their due?
Did they ask us the same that they took for themselves?
And did we give anything else, that you should marvel?
Did we give them anything other than wonder and awe?
