Did the companions departing at midday alarm you with their parting?

And there was no refuge from parting with loved ones.

When the whole company’s departure caught him unawares, there was

no alarm for him except the howdahs being curtained.

They were draped in patterned rugs and fine cloth, as though it were

red gore of Ḍarā above the long-striding she-camels.

Will a gray-haired man be excused for ardent longing?

And will he be praised for patience, if he is patient?

ʿAynā demands my heart of me, yet her cord

is severed when she fears harm from you.

And she knows that her arrows have already struck home,

and what I feared from her has struck me down.

Did you not know that my disposition does not endure,

and that I do not seek affection that turns away?

And when I part from a brother over his conduct,

I keep my pledge and do not change.

By your life, my people suffer no sickness among themselves,

    when a howling, icy crosswind lashes the camp;

when the tribe settles amid withered growth, where one sees no

    green tint of a twig there to draw the gaze back;

when the dry-uddered camels return at dusk with hunched backs,

and guests are received with brushwood and meat allotted by lots,

then the stranger under our protection never tires of our dwelling,

nor does the fire-seeking night visitor overwhelm us.

And that holds if none spreads evil among us—

no fool, nor, in ignorance, a dog with sharpened teeth.

And when kinship and affection stir tenderness among us,

we overlook the grave offense and forgive.

But things have soured since enmity arose among us,

and grudges have begun to multiply among us.

Severed kinship ties, doom, and misery—

and among fortune’s stumbles—for fortune does stumble.

And reputations are devoured and perish, as though they were

readily available grain, measured out and brought to hand.

And we were cousins, but our wayward men drove us

toward an end whose like you once scorned.

So now we meet with the remnant of our affection—

when we meet, like Kisrā’s people and Ḥimyar.

And I told all my people: “Since you have rushed

toward the worst thing one can rush toward, desist!”

And I am like a healer seeking relief for a head wound,

while beneath it lies yellow, rotted bone.

When I say my people’s sickness is fading, they rally

with a demonic verse that nearly strips the bone bare.

    يَطيشُ قَوافي المُفحَمينَ وَيَنفِرُ

    With it, the poet ʿAḍbān tarnishes reputations;

he scatters the rhymes of silenced poets and drives them away.

As though everyone’s speech had been gathered before him,

so he takes from its edges, fashioning ornate verse.

So he would accept only weighty, virgin verses,

almost dripping with scalding blood from the body’s depths.
