نَلوذُ بِهِ إِلاّ السُيوفُ القَواطِعٌ
And we are a people with no barrier in our land
We are a people with no refuge in our land
To shelter behind, save keen-edged swords.
Except for merciless sharp swords
وَلَمand did not يُبقِleave مِنّاof us القَتلُthe slaughter إِلاّexcept عِصابَةًa band

And slaughter has left of us only a band
And slaughter has left of us only a band
That fights with spears for our ancestral honor and trades blows.
That fights for our sake and engages in contests
وَأَبيَضَand a fair man لاnot يُشرىis bought بِشَيءٍfor anything أَفاتَهُslew him

أَسِنَّتُنا وَالنَقعُ أَغبَرُ ساطِعُ
And a fair warrior, beyond all price, was felled by
A whiteness that cannot be bought with anything it missed
Our spearheads, while grey dust rose high.
Our tongues and flashing swords pierce andlacerate

وَجَربانَ سَيفٍ سَلَّهُ إِذ تُماصِعُ
We left upon him two broken pieces of a Samhari spear,
We left on it the thrust of two well-honed swords
And the sheath of a sword he drew as blows were traded.
And the slashing of a sword that clashed as it hacked
