لَئِنeven if ظَفِرِتُمyou have captured بِشَيخٍan old man مِنfrom among مَشايِخِناour elders
لاnot يَحمِلُhe carries الرُمحَthe spear وَالصَمصامَةَand the keen sword الذَكَراof hard steel
Even if you have captured an old man from among our elders,
If you have captured an elder of ours
who carries neither spear nor the keen steel sword,
Who bears neither spear nor sword
وَلاand not يَخوضُhe plunges into غِمارَthe depths of المَوتِdeath مُنصَلِتاًrushing headlong
وَلاand not يَرىhe knows لِلرَدىtoward death وَرداًan approach وَلاnor صَدراa retreat
and does not plunge headlong into the depths of death,
And does not plunge into the thick of battle
and knows neither an approach to death nor a retreat from it,
Seeing no virtue in havoc, no valor in devastation
فَكَمyet how many قَتَلناwe have slain لَكُمof yours فِتيانَyoung men of مَلحَمَةٍfierce battle

yet how many young warriors of yours we have slain
How many spirited youths have we killed for your sake
at early forenoon, when the sun’s brow had already appeared.
When dawn was still gray and the sun's brow barely showing
