كَذا أغرَاهُ بالوَعدِ احتِيَالا

Thus he lured him with a promise, deceitfully,
Thus he enticed him with the promise of guile
And left him imagining what he would never attain.
And abandoned him to see what he’d never attain

It seemed to him—how deluded he was!—that he would conquer
So he had no luck even with what had misled him
Ilium that very day, taking possession of it.
On that day to take Ilioun by storm

The god decreed for him a war of shifting fortunes.
He had ordained for all the tribes that war of clashing

He prepared misery for both peoples alike,
That would bring misery for the masses of both sides
And calamities when they clashed in battle.
And calamities when they engaged in deadly combat
