The gods had convened around Zeus

a council in that gilded court.

With cups of gold she moved among them—

Hebe—while the choice wine was poured in turn.

Then from their heights they gazed upon Ilium,

and Zeus spoke bitterly in reproach.

He spoke, wishing to anger Hera:

Here is Menelaus, sheltered by two goddesses.

That Argive Hera has embraced him,

and Athena zealously champions his victory.

    إِنَّما عَفرُ ذِيتُ فارِيسَ تَصحَب

    And both were gladdened at the sight of him from afar;

    Aphrodite alone keeps Paris company.

She wards death off from him with smiles, and now

has saved him from doom, which had nearly seized him.

Victory surely belongs to the son of Atreus alone.

So come, let us decide what is to follow:

Shall we spill blood and kindle war,

or deem it better to spare it by making peace?

Then, if you seek peace, Priam shall remain

in Ilium, revered among his kin,

and Menelaus shall depart with Helen.

Thus peace shall prevail, and bloodshed be stopped.
