So, after he had listened to Nestor,

Achilles went cleaving through the crowd,

bringing forth the prize for boxing:

a stubborn mule in its sixth year,

    unbroken—indeed, almost unapproachable—

and a cup for whoever was plainly defeated.

He cried: “Whichever two surpass the host

and are strong in the arts of boxing,

let them come forward: this prize stands ready.

Whoever is aided to victory by Phoebus,

and for whom the crowd bears witness, shall be given

    this exceedingly strong mule;

and the cup shall duly be bestowed on the defeated.”

Then rose a mighty, fearless champion,

    Epeius, Panopeus’s skilled young son.

He laid a hand upon the mule and said:

“You who seek the cup, step forward at once!

For none but me among you shall win the mule—

no youth, while one like me contests this arena.

Enough that I am no master of battle!

Who is there who has ranged through every field?

I have spoken, and my speech is true:

whoever stands against me, I shall cut him limb from limb.

Let his companions make men ready for him,

to carry him away, burdened with punishment.”

They all fell silent, except Euryalus,

peer of immortality’s sons, undaunted by terrors,

scion of Mecisteus, Talaus’s son, the man who

had been among the greatest boxers of the age:

he had appeared at the funeral of Oedipus

in Thebes, and vanquished the descendants of Cadmus.

And toward him Diomedes, rousing him,

hastened, seeking his victory and urging him on.

He fastened the belt for him around his waist,

and wrapped his fist in a wild bull’s hide.

Then both stepped into the arena, raising

their hands together and trading blows,

until there fist clashed against fist,

and their limbs sweated, and their jaws clattered.

Then Epeius lunged and struck Euryalus

in the face with a savage champion’s blow.

He could not endure its dreadful force,

and his limbs trembled, and he swayed,

like a fish when a storm rages with a north wind,

quivering on the bank amid the sea’s swell.

    But Epeius bent over him,

    lifting him between his forearms.

His comrades hastened away with him, and twisted

was his leg; his head, too, drooped.

There flowed, while he was wholly unaware,

his blood in torrents from his mouth.

Thus they carried him away in utter despair,

yet did not fail to take that cup.
