Pallas took the god of war by the hand.

And said, "How long this slaughter, O shedder of blood,

O destroyer of walls, O bringer of annihilation?

Why not leave war to mortals as their arena?

Leave them to their affairs, while we stand apart,

and let Zeus, as arbiter, exalt whomever he wishes.

Thus we avoid his wrath." And she went with him

to Scamander's bank, where they both held back.

The Trojan foes then fled before the Greeks,

and each leader among them slew a fierce warrior.

So Agamemnon was the first to slay

Odius, who belonged to the Halizonians.

He dealt him a thrust as he turned to flee

in a chariot, seeking escape as his prize.

His back was shattered, cleft through to the chest,

and he was felled, struck down upon the earth, and sprawled.

His armor clanged upon him; and Idomeneus

charged boldly at the son of Borus the Maeonian.

For Phaestus had come from the land of Tarnab,

then he was gone, the light of his eyes darkened by death.

He was about to climb onto his chariot's platform, in

hope of escape, but death came first.

A thrust struck him upon his right shoulder,

and flung him face-first into the dust of the low ground.

Then the companions of King Idomeneus hastened

to strip his weapons from him, as spoils to be shared.

And Menelaus sought Scamandrius, son of Strophius,

and advanced, swiftly striking him with a spear.

Amid the heaps he had been a fearsome terror

to beasts of the wilderness, and had mastered archery.

And Artemis had taught him her arts,

but the prowess within him, risen to the heights, availed him nothing.

The spear was driven through his shoulders, piercing

through to the chest as he strove to flee.

He fell face-first upon the low-lying ground,

and above him came the crashing sound of iron.

    And Meriones came behind Phereclus,

and swiftly thrust at his haunch, shattering it.

A blade was driven beneath the bone, tearing

his bladder; he collapsed upon his knees, groaning.

He was the son of noble Harmonides, the craftsman whom

Pallas esteemed and enriched with favors.

She had taught him refinement of taste; and his son

followed his example and learned the crafts of the hands.

So he skillfully built all the ships of Paris,

and they became a downpour of sweeping evil upon them.

And the light of life left him; he had not

understood beforehand the tidings of heaven.

And Meges came upon Pedaeus, stabbing

his nape with the tempered spearhead and splitting it.

The spearhead passed through his jaw, piercing

his incisors and cutting his tongue clean through.

He fell, biting the blade and flailing in the dust,

and set Antenor's heart ablaze with grief.

and had grown up with Theano, his lawful wife.

So, out of love for Antenor, she gave him an honored home,

and he grew up a fosterling, honored like the sons.

Next came the son of Dolopion, priest of Zansh,

and revered among them like the gods.

Eurypylus pursued him as he was retreating,

but being humbled and routed availed him nothing.

He caught him, severing his shoulder with the sword,

so he died without reaching the goal he had imagined.
