    'Companions! Chiefs! Princes!

You who at the tables of Atreus' two sons

have drunk wine from the army's allotted share,

and whom exalted Zeus has favored

    to command among the warriors!

    concealing the glittering helmets that

blazed, and urging them to preserve the corpse.

    saying, 'Aeneas, my support!

Look: I have seen from afar

    Achilles' splendid horses being driven

by two inexperienced charioteers in battle.

If you support me in pursuing them,

I shall capture both—what excellent spoils!

Their two drivers lack the strength

to face us and repel our assault.'

    with shields upon whose oxhide

    bronze plates dazzled the eye.

    With them Chromius sped forward,

    and handsome young Aretus.

All sought harm for the two charioteers

and a return with those noble horses as treasure.

They were deluded: they would never return

without shedding their blood in defeat.

    Automedon invoked Zeus in supplication,

then pressed forward and shouted, 'Alcimedon!

Keep these horses close beside me,

so that their breath falls upon my shoulders.

For Hector will not desist until

he gains victory and sheds blood,

    يفلها مبدداً مبيدا

    driving back horses and soldiers,

    routing, scattering, and destroying them;

or until, at our noble army's forefront,

we overcome him, defeated and humbled.'

    Then he shouted, 'Greater Ajax!

    Menelaus! Lesser Ajax!

The burden of defending the slain man's corpse—

entrust it to the best warriors in the army,

and reach us while we are still alive! For

Hector has appeared, and Aeneas has arrived.

to his belt and pierced his guts.

    He leaped once, then toppled

backward, the blade standing there quivering,

as when a man of strength and valor

confronts a bull with a sharpened axe,

severing the sinew at the horns' root:

it leaps, falls, then lies upon its back.

planting itself violently in the earth, trembling.

    The two champions almost clashed

with swords instead of spears and spearheads,

had not the two Ajaxes rushed forward

to aid Automedon when they heard him.

lying with his entrails torn apart.

Automedon surged forward like a storm,

    stripped his equipment, and hurried

to cry, 'Some sorrow has cleared from my heart!

    Though Patroclus cannot be matched

by this young man, however men esteem him.'

then quickly mounted and stood upright,

his hands and feet stained with blood,

like a lion that has crushed a bull with its paws.

    Within a cloud of purple

she arrived upon her momentous mission.

Like a rainbow in the heart of heaven,

set there by Zeus to announce what he decrees,

warning of war and the year's cold,

and hardship for the farmer and grazing herds,

she entered among them in the clouds,

urging them from within those veils.

Then she resembled Phoenix, an accomplished—

old man, addressing brave Menelaus first:

'Shame and disgrace, that they should tear—

apart Achilles' faithful steeds, the enemy's dogs!

it turned away resentfully, with wounded spirit.

fearing the onset of a worse disaster:

disaster upon us—would it had never come!

It is immense, and I think you clearly know:

Fly to Achilles; perhaps in his grief

he will rise to seek his naked corpse.

So the duty of considering carefully falls upon us:

    carrying Patroclus to the camp

and withdrawing from the tangle of swords,

    escaping the onrush of death.'

Ajax, son of Telamon, said, 'Yes.

Whoever speaks such words speaks wisely.

You and Meriones carry the fallen man

and move far away from us with him.

Behind you both we shall fight the enemy,

    repelling Hector and the Trojans.

Young Ajax and I are two champions,

alike in valor and in name.

How many fierce warriors we have checked before!

How often we have stood together in the charge!'

Before he finished, they quickly bent down,

raised the corpse, and moved away.

The Trojans clamored and surged forward

like dogs running ahead of young hunters.

They pursued a wounded boar, coveting

it; then it turned toward them, and they panicked

    and fled, pushing one another,

like the Trojan army when it charged.

They pursued the Greeks with weapons,

striking and stabbing with the edges of their spears.

Whenever the space grew narrow, both

Ajaxes turned toward them and stood.

They turned pale, faltered, and weakened,

all forgetting their pursuit of the body.

The other two champions toward the ships

hurried with it, while slaughter's dust rose,

like fire kindled under the wind's crashing gusts

in a broad town with many lofty roofs.

    It devours the inhabitants' houses,

and the storm roars over the buildings.

Such was the clamor of the army and horses

behind them as they sought the fleet.

They kept running with the body,

like two mules coming from the mountains,

straining beneath a sturdy log they carried,

prepared above the forest for a ship.

They pushed vigorously through rough terrain,

    sweat streaming from their exertion.

As for the two Ajaxes, behind them

they resembled a mountain in a valley's bed,

standing mighty against a river's course,

so that, subdued, it swiftly turns aside.

Thus the two Ajaxes, facing the companies,

checked the detachments of their rushing army.

    أنياس يغريهم وهكطور يثب

    But the Trojans remained in pursuit;

Aeneas urged them on and Hector leaped forward.

Two champions at whom the armies clamored

and fled in terror, seeking aid!

They resembled a cloud of starlings

turning away at the sight of a predatory hawk.

They saw in it a dreadful death

and fled outright from its face.

So the Greeks, in their exposed formation,

    turned away frightened and humiliated,

leaving upon the bank and in the ditch

much of their armor, fallen in heaps.

Nor was this the end of battle

or of hardship's havoc and calamity.
