سَمعاًListen! أُصَيحابيmy dear companions رأيتُI saw دُجىًin darkness
طَيفَa phantom الكَرَىslumber واللَّيلُand the night قدalready صَرَّاdeepened in darkness
Listen, my dear companions: in the darkness I saw
My friends, I saw darkness fall
a phantom of sleep, when the night had deepened,
The specter of fate and night enveloped us
فيin شَكلِthe form of نَسطُورٍNestor وَهَيئَتِهِand his likeness
مُتَمَثِّلاًappearing ليto me قالَhe said مٌذas soon as خَرَّاhe descended
in Nestor's form and likeness,
In the form of Nestor, his appearance
appearing before me; as he descended, he said:
Manifested, and he said after descending:
لِمwhy ياO ابنَson of أَترَاAtreus القَرمَthe mighty chief تَهجُعَyou sleep ماnot
ذَاthis شأنُthe way of مولىًa lord يَملِكُholds الأَمراcommand
Why sleep, mighty son of Atreus? This is not
Why, son of Atreus, do you slumber unaware
the way of a lord who holds command.
Of your duty as commander of men?
مَنone who قدalready توَلَّىhas taken charge أَمرَthe affairs of أُمتهِhis people
أَنَّىhow ينامُdoes he sleep الليلةَthe night الحَرَّىthe burning
One who has taken charge of his people—
He who has assumed leadership of his people
how can he sleep through this burning night?
How can he sleep on such a critical night?
فاحفَظso remember كَلاميmy words زَفسُZeus بيwith me لكَto you مِنfrom
قاصيthe far reaches of أَعالِيهِhis heights لَقَدindeed أَسرَىsent by night
So remember my words: Zeus has sent me to you from
Remember my words, I hasten to you from
his farthest heights on a journey through the night.
The furthest heights, I have flown here.
مالتturned إلىtoward الإِغرِيقِthe Greeks رأفَتُهُhis compassion
فأَرَادَso he wished أَنthat تَستَدفِعَالضُّرَّاyou ward off harm
His compassion turned toward the Greeks,
My compassion inclined toward the Greeks
so he wished you to ward off harm,
I wished to ward off harm from them.
فيwith كُلِّall مَنwho وَالاكَstands by you تَزحَفُyou advance إِذfor
قَدalready حَانَthe time has come فَتحُthe capture of البَلدَةِthe city الكُبرَىthe great
advancing with all who stand by you, for
In all those loyal to you, march forth
the time to take the great city has come.
For the destined conquest of the great city.
أربابُناour gods طُرًّاall قدِalready اتَّفَقُواhave agreed
وَلِقَولِand to the word of هيراHera أَذعَنُواthey yielded طُرَّاall
Our gods have all agreed,
Our lords have agreed and plotted
and to Hera's word they have all yielded.
And acquiesced to Hera's word completely.
وَعلىand against بَنيthe sons of الطُّروَادِthe Troad زَفسُZeus قَضَىhas decreed
بالوَيلِwith doom فاخبُرso understand أَمرَهُhis decree خُبراwith full understanding
And against the sons of the Troad, Zeus has decreed
And against the sons of Troy, Zeus has decreed
doom; so understand his decree fully.
Misfortune, so inform them of his command.
منfrom ثَمَّthere عَنِّيfrom me غَابَhe vanished مُحتَجِباًhidden from sight
لَكِنَّنيbut I أُهبِبتُwas roused مُضطَراَّagainst my will
Then he vanished from me, hidden from sight,
Then from me he disappeared, concealing himself
but I was roused against my will.
Though I was compelled and distraught,
أَوَand كَيفَhow نُغرِيwe urge on الجُندضthe troops فيin عَجَلٍhaste
حَتَّىso that يَكُرُّواthey charge لِلِّقَاinto battle كَرَّاa charge
And how shall we spur the troops on swiftly,
How can we spur the soldiers urgently
so that they make a fierce charge into battle?
To prepare for battle and attack?
فأَناso I سأَبلُوهُمshall test them وَأَدفَعُهُمand urge them
بالقَولwith words فَوقَonto سَفِينِهِمtheir ships فَرَّاin flight
So I shall test them and urge them
I will rouse them and drive them
with words to flee aboard their ships.
With my words atop their ship speedily.
وَعَلَيكُمُand it is your duty أَنتُمyou yourselves بِجَهدِكُمُwith your utmost effort
تَستَنهِضُونyou rouse العَزمَresolve وَالصَّبراand endurance
And you yourselves must, with all your effort,
And you must with all your strength
rouse resolve and endurance.
Summon your resolve and patience.
