and dark blood flowed and surged,

the farmers' buildings are shaken by it,

and their hopes vanish beneath a surge

that Zeus sent pouring down upon it.

So the enemy ranks, though greater in number,

could find no strength today to hold him back.

piercing shafts, and a keen, cleaving sword.

    “O finest horsemen, loyal people,

“If you, daughter of the lord of shields,

strengthened me amid the clash of battle's woes,

and never forsook my father before me,

do not hide yourself from what I seek.

She leaned toward him, saying, “Come, charge

    again upon the enemy's position!

and removed the cloud, that I may show you.

meet: a mortal or a conquering immortal.

charge against the men with chariots.’

I thought to depart from his advice.

I said, ‘The horses would waste away in these lands,

for lack of pasture beneath the siege.’

and set out for Ilium, out of love for

Hector, leading my people into battle.

If I return to my wife and companion,

and my halls with their lofty roofs,

may no enemy refrain from cutting off my head

if I fail to fulfill the declarations I make.

This bow I shall crush most utterly,

and cast into the heart of the fire to burn.

avail in use, as experience has taught me.”

It is better for resistance; come and hasten,

let us wait to meet him without delay.

For you shall learn well how my horses

run across the plains, attacking and retreating.

And if Zeus wills Diomedes's victory,

with them we shall hide beyond his reach.

that you drive the horses, since you know them better.

if we are forced to flee.

They may bolt, charging among the troops,

and Diomedes will come with his iron,

destroy us both, and lead the horses

away. So drive them: you are more experienced.

Mine shall be the thrusting with spears and lances.”

    To Diomedes Sthenelus said,

as the two came on, kindling fire:

“O companion of my heart, I see two rivals

who have risen now, truly seeking you:

    Aeneas, son of Aphrodite and

Anchises, and also the valiant Pandarus.

    لا تَكُن في مُقَدَّماتِ السَّرايا

    Beware now the catastrophes of death;

do not stand at the companies' forefront.

Let us slow the thoroughbreds' pace.” Then

Diomedes answered him in words of disdain:

“Do not speak to me of flight, for I

do not think you can gain that aim from me.

It is not my way, nor my forebears' way,

to turn our backs on the day of battle.

I have a resolve that does not bend to calamities,

too proud for riding in driven chariots.

Here you have it: I charge on foot, attacking,

and Athena has forbidden me to flee.

    إن نَجا ذا فذَاكَ أُلقِي صَرِيعا

    Their horses will not save them both;

if one escapes, the other shall lie slain.

    فادَّكِرهُ إِذَا بَطَشتُ ادِّكارا

    But I have another purpose in this matter;

remember it well when I strike.

If I make them both taste the cup of death,

and Athena thereby raises my standing,

at once lay my horses' reins in my

chariot, and run from it eagerly.

Go, and lead away Aeneas's fine-bred pair,

the finest horses in the world.

They were bred from Zeus's steeds, which were given to

    King Tros as a keepsake,

in exchange for Ganymede, his son who was lifted away.

As recompense, he gained the stock of the finest offspring.

Anchises desired their offspring and sought them

in secret, when he bred the mares.

They produced six; he kept two pairs,

and gave this pair to Aeneas.

    آهِ لَو مِنهُ أَبلُغُ الأَوطارا

    See it sweeping across the plains;

ah, if only through it I could attain my wishes!”
