He said, 'Old man, beware of coming near my ships [reading uncertain],

    whether you return or remain.

No protection lies in this sceptre, nor in

these wreaths of his lord, for you.

You shall not obtain the maiden; rather, she shall remain

in my land, Argos, like the others.

She will grow infirm while weaving cotton

within my palace, in exile and abasement,

and attend my bed. So rise, and fear my wrath,

if you seek to join your companions safely.'

The old man took fright and withdrew, downcast, along

the shore of a sea roaring across the horizons.

Then, in solitude, he prayed, and his prayer

    rose to Latona's son, Apollo:

    حُقَّ مَولَى تِنيذُسٍ إِحقَاقِي

    'Lord, O bearer of the silver bow, answer me;

Lord of Tenedos, my vindication is due.

O guardian of Sminth, O helper of Cilla

and Chryse, O my Lord, take hold of my girdle.

If I have ever adorned your radiant temple,

or ever made sacrifices by fire,

and consecrated the thighs [reading uncertain] of kids and the bull,

so they streamed with their poured-out fat,

then, against the sons of Danaus, let your unyielding arrows

wreak death for the tears at the corners of these eyes.'
