رَمَانَيcast me زَفسٌZeus فيinto حَبَائِلِthe snares of آتِياAte
Hear my words, sons of Danaus, for
Zeus has cast me into Ate's snares.
وَقدand indeed كانَhad وَالأنيassured me بإِيماءِwith a nod of رَأسهِhis head

And he had assured me with a nod of his head
that at Ilium we would batter down the ramparts,
وَلاَand not نَنثَنِيreturn لِلأَهلِto our kin إِلاَّexcept بِسبَيِهاwith her captives

and not return to our kin without her captives.
Yet he lied—how perverse he was in what he inflicted on me!

I have lost the mightiest men, and he has decreed
that I must return to Argos in disgrace.

Yes, such is the decree willed by the Ruler who
tears down the lofty pillars of cities.

our sons and those who live in years to come,

when they learn that, with our army's great numbers
and strength, we came marching upon our enemies,

yet reaped only disappointment, though their numbers
were few, and we disregarded the successive hardships.

and the Greeks were divided into tens, and the
sons of Ilium passed brimming cups around,

they would all go round with wine, yet there would be no
cupbearer among them for many of the groups of ten.
كذَاso دُونَناbelow us كَانُواthey were عِدَاداًin number وَإِنَّماbut only

So far below us were they in number; only
through their allies do they gain aid to match us.
فَمِنfor from كُلِّevery فَجٍّmountain pass كُلُّevery أَيهَمَdauntless فَاتِكٍdeadly warrior

For from every pass, every dauntless, deadly warrior
came to them and faced me with fierce resolve.

So they repelled my troops, defying my resolve,
and while they remain, I shall not take Troy unawares.

For nine years have passed in our siege;
our ships are nearly falling apart.

Yet I have not attained the goal I came to seek,
and our wives remain far away from us,

in our halls, among our sons and kin,
yearning for nearness to us, yet never attaining it.

So come, obey me: defeat is a gain.
Indeed, I see Zeus decreeing our return.

And I give you a true, certain pledge: we shall not see
a conquest of Ilium in which our hopes are fulfilled.
