Dawn clothed the earth's face in a saffron robe.
The dawn adorned the face of the earth with a saffron robe,
And Zeus, father of terrors, stood on the highest heights.
And the roar of the father of terrors on the highest peaks,
عَلىon قُمَّةِthe summit الأُولمِبِof Olympus تُصغِيlisten مَهَابَةًin awe

On Olympus's summit, listening in awe
At the summit of Olympus listening in awe,
to his speech, the gods formed an assembly.
To his speech the gods assembled in his court.
فَقَالَso he said لِيَعلَمlet know كُلُّevery رَبٍّgod وَرِبَّةٍand goddess

He said: Let every god and goddess know
So he said to let every lord and lady know,
what my heart has concealed within my breast today.
What in my heart today I harbor and conceal.

Let no rebel reject my command; submit instead,
So let no rebel spurn the command, obey,
that I may execute the decree I have resolved.
I have resolved on a predetermined matter.

You will return stricken, drenched in blood.

Otherwise, from lofty Olympus, by my hand,
And by Olympian Zeus I swear, with my hands
he shall be cast and hurled into pitch-black darkness,
I will hurl them into darkness and stone them,

To a chasm between hell and thence,

lower chains of gold from the blue sky,
Lower chains of blue iron from the sky,
and all gather together at their end.
And all of you hang together at their ends.

You shall gain no hold upon Zeus, your lord,
Yet you will not reach the stride of Zeus though you strive,
however you toil, however you exert yourselves.
However you endeavor and pretend.

But whenever I wish, I shall pull them up,
But I easily can drag the earth and sea,
dragging earth and seas along beneath you.
And whirl them around Olympian Zeus their master.

Around my lofty Olympus I shall wind them;
They fell silent in awe and reverence,
the universe shall hang from them, their captive.
Then Athena spoke sighing heavily:
فَيَعلَمَso may know كُلُّall الجِنِّspirits وَالإِنسِand mortals مَبلَغِيmy measure

Then all spirits and mortals shall know my measure
Yes, father, o leader of the people completely,
of might, and all worlds that I am their ruler.
We know your strength will not bend or break.

They listened silently, in reverence and dread.
But we grieve for the state of the wretches,
Then Athena spoke, her sighs pouring forth:
Whom fate condemns beneath the blows.
أَجَلyes أَبَتاFather ياO قَيِّمَguardian القَومِof the company جُملَةًall together

Yes, Father, guardian of all the company,
We obey so we avoid strife, but only
we know your strength will never yield or be subdued.
Guide them with counsel fearing consequences.

But we grieve for the Greeks' condition:
Zeus thundered, lightning inciting calamity:
fate destroys them beneath their armor.
This anger will uproot their race completely!

He said to her, “If my harshness pains you,
support them with counsel, fearing calamities.
From you the grace of gentleness I will not spare.

Otherwise this wrath will tear them out by the roots.
The horses' trappings shone beneath armor
The thunderbolt-rouser smiled, gazing upon her,
Of solid bronze and ridges of blue iron,
وقَالَand he said لَئِنif indeed رَاعَتكِfrightened you مِنِّيfrom me صَرامَةٌsternness

and said: If sternness from me has frightened you,
With a dark chariot whose poles were plated,
I shall not withhold gracious gentleness from you.
And dressed in a garment of fine linen held with studs,

Beneath their harness, adorning the horses, shone
In his hand the fresh whip to drive them
hooves of steel and manes of gold.
From the azure dome to the earth leaping.

He attached their harness to a splendid chariot
He came to where the Simois and Scamander join,
and took his place majestically, robed in pure gold.
And stopped at the sacred grove of Priam thundering.
وَفيand in يَدِهِhis hand سَوطُa whip النُّضَارِof gold يَسوُقُهاhe drives them

In his hand was a golden whip, driving them;
There near a hill he halted the steeds, and the place
from the blue vault they sped toward earth.
Had an expansive precinct sacred to Zeus.
فَبُلِّغَso he reached إِيذاIda جَمَّةَabundant السَّيحِin flowing water مَنهَلاًa spring

He reached Ida, rich in flowing springs,
He sat leaning now to the Trojan camp,
mother of wild beasts, and settled upon Gargara.
Now to the ships of the Achaeans impartial,
هُنَاكَthere لَدىbeside غابٍa grove أُجِلَّتrevered وَهَيكَلِand a temple

There, beside a revered grove and a temple
Then at midday from his sacred balance
fragrant in his honor, he halted the attending horses.
He let fall two death lots, one for each people.
وَمُذand when حَلَّهاhe unyoked them بَينَamid الضَّبابِmist أَحَلَّهاhe lodged them

When he unyoked them, he lodged them amid mist
The lot of the Achaean children fell to the ground,
and, in proud majesty, occupied the highest seat.
And the lot of Priam's sons flew high through the air.
يَمِيلُhe turns غِلىtoward الطُّروَادِthe Trojans حِيناًat one time وَتارَةًand another time

He looked toward the Trojans now, and now
Then Zeus thundered from the Idan peaks menacing,
toward the Greeks' ships, himself apart.
And between Achaean corslets lightning flashed.

The Greeks hastily took their provisions
Struck with fear they were shaken and turned in retreat,
and sprang up in their tents to prepare their arms.
And Nestor loosed the reins, terrified.

Their enemies likewise, though fewer in number:
He shouted, “Diomedes, see you not clearly
helmeted, their troops emerged from Ilion.
Today Zeus' victory from us withdrawn?”

Necessity's summons inflamed them for war,
So let us cede to Hector this day, and then
that honor be preserved and their children spared.
When he wills we shall be granted triumph.
وَلَمَّاand when تَدانَواthey drew near وَالنُّفُوسُand the souls سَوَاخِطٌwere wrathful

When they drew near, their souls wrathful,
Diomedes saw the truth and said:
the armies surged forth, burning with fury.
“You spoke rightly. My heart and soul

Spear-thrusts met armored breasts,
Would choose to be swallowed by the earth
and blows stained dark armor with blood;
Rather than be shamed and defeated.”
وَزَفَرَةُand a groan مَقتُولٍof one killed وَنَعرَةُand a shout قاتِلٍof a killer

a dying man's groan, a killer's shout,
And Hector shouted to his Trojan comrades:
and streams of blood over trembling earth.
“Diomedes to the ships has thrown himself in fear!”
فَزَالَthen passed ضُحَىthe morning الاَقداسِsacred والنًّقعُand the dust فائِرٌwas seething

The holy morning passed, the dust seething
But him, son of Tydeus, though alone,
in a war blazing like fire upon both peoples.
The valor of his chest defended from harm.

When the sun stood midway in heaven's heart,
Sthenelus and Eurypylus came to his side,
he rose to set his golden balance true.
Like a child seeking his mother's breast.
وَأَلقىand cast بِهِinto it قِدحَينِtwo lots لِلمَوتِof death والشَّقاand misery

Into it he cast two lots of death and misery,
Eurypylus shielded him with his shield,
one appointed portion for each people.
Now raising it to peer out and discern
فَسَهمُso the portion بَنيof the sons الإغرِيقِof Greece مالَsank غِلىtoward الثَّرىearth

The Greeks' portion sank toward earth,
A gap in the enemy ranks to loose an arrow,
and the Trojans' portion soared into the sky.
Taking aim at a Trojan through his guardian.
فَأَرعَدَthen thundered مِنfrom أَطوادِthe mountains إِيذاof Ida هَدِيدُهُhis rumbling

His rumbling thunder sounded from Ida's mountains,
Behind them came Ajax and Idomeneus
and he flashed lightning among the armored Greeks.
Who had told Meriones of mighty Ares,

A tremor shattered them with overwhelming terror;
Then the son of Oileus and Teucer the archer
their strongest fighters turned and fled.
As the ninth, surrounding themselves with the pall of death.

Idomeneus withdrew, and Atreides; hard pressed
Atridae exulted seeing them among the warriors
by a fallen horse he had driven, one looked on.
And honored Diomedes between the armies proclaiming:
بِمَقتَلِat a fatal spot بادِيthe beginning العُرفِof the mane فيin أُمِّthe crown رَأسهِof its head

At the fatal spot where the mane begins, in its skull,
“O son of Tydeus, beloved jewel and flower
Paris's arrow lodged deep into the brain.
Of the soldiers, loose your arrows chanting,
فَشَبَّso it reared وأَهوَىand fell خابِطاًthrashing مُتَمَرِّغاًrolling

It reared and fell, thrashing and rolling;
Haply you may grant the Danaans triumph,
all the horses reared in terror at it.
And raise your sire's concern and fame supported by me.

Nestor rushed with his sword to cut the straps,
If I gain Zeus and Athena's victory,
while Hector approached with his horses beneath the din.

Death's sword nearly drank its fill from the old man,
Chariot or chariot with three horses, as you wish,
but Diomedes made straight to aid him.
For after me you will vanquish the foe.

Seeing him, he shouted loudly to Odysseus:
Those dogs attacked though few we are,
Where are you going, cunning one? Fear drives you back!
Fate driving them to the black ships willfully.
أَلَمdid you not تَخشَfear أَنَّthat الطَّعنَa thrust يُصمِيكضkills you مُدبِراًretreating

Their wounds will pain them in their homelands,
You have turned among the men, seeking cover!
While others will not dare this war again.

And you, companions of Zeus the seer, bind
But he hurried his horses toward the ships, unheeding.

Diomedes, though left alone,
And drive them headlong to its outskirts,
sped to the army's front with a fearless heart.
To the ramparts the exalted once erected.

Reaching Nestor, he checked his haste
Let all the wailing women remain
and said: Indeed, old man, your strength is spent.
In their homes, fires kindled till dawn,
يَصُولُassail عَلَيكَyou المُردُbeardless youths فيin حَومَةِthe midst الوَغىof battle

Beardless youths assail you amid the battle,
For in Ilium there are no soldiers, and I fear
and you cannot endure with youth's vigor.
On them the enemy may pounce in time of need.”

Your attendant is feeble, and your horses have failed.
So Agamemnon counseled and dispersed them.
Leave them to our companions; try my chariot.
Then Zeus who gathers the clouds debated alone,
وَهَيِّand come اختَبِرtest جُرداَsleek horses بأُطرُوسَin Troy ثُقِّفَتtrained

Come, test these sleek horses trained in Troy:
Leaning to raze the Argives, and then leaning
swift when charging and when retreating.
To abstain, perplexed by the two thoughts,
ببَأسِيby my might مِنfrom إِيناسَAeneas مِنfrom قَبلُbefore نِلتُهاI won them

While Zeus indicated thrice to the Trojans
They suffice to carry us through this blazing war,
Victory, thundering from his mountain.

Nestor consented, and Sthenelus returned,
Zeus indicates to me triumph revealed,
with Eurymedon, taking the horses in haste.
Glory and destruction of hated enemies.

Those dogs came in ships, and their bastion
and plied the whip, letting the reins' ends trail.
They supposed would humble my power,

When they reached Hector at once,
But my horses will breach their trench invading,
Diomedes launched his spearpoint, which missed him
And beyond it to you I bring tidings exact.

So if I near the Argive ships, cast at them
He fell upon the ground, his body crumpled.
Fierce fire unceasing to engulf them in smoke.

Then they will perish and the blaze ascend,
for his attendant, while the horses reared wildly.
Destroyed by the lance's point and spearhead.

Archeptolemus hastened forward to him.
Forwards Xanthus, Podargus, yearning for battle,

Aethon and Lampus, for now you are sated
to Ilion like sheep, as disaster grew grievous.

Nestor alive, taming the war-cry Atridae,

If we win these two, no doubt after them
A day shall come for us, when he wills our victory.
Their soldiers to the ships will come submissive.

Spurned like filth, once mighty, now disgraced.

Hector's voice rang out among his men:

So charged Hector, inciting fatality.
I have seen Zeus incline to aid me,
Before him stormed Diomedes, urging the Argives:
يُخَوِّلُنِيhe grants me نَصراًvictory مُبِيناًclear وَعِزَّةًand honor

Then the clamor of meeting spears rang out
to imagine it would bend my resolve!

Zeus granted the Trojans respite and pitying
spearpoint and sharpened blade shall destroy them all.
Their enemies even to the trench were distraught.

While the hindmost were slain by swords at their backs.

So Hector cutting a path instilled panic.

pouring wine upon it at your feeding time!
They rallied each other and turned in defiance.

There by slain Ptroclus's corpse conflict continued
her vigorous husband! Now hasten your steps!
Among both peoples, and blood flowed on the earth.

But a day will come when he will call me
Hephaestus bestowed upon him, sheltering him.
'My daughter of the azure eyes, my beloved.'

To champion Achilles against the bane.”

Hector poured out his wishes as he pleased.
So she turned back the mares, calming Hera's spirit.
At that disaster Hera stirred in anguish;
Zeus watched from Olympus, filled with wrath:

she shook upon her throne and rocked heaven,
“Why the complaint and this estrangement?
and angrily cried to mighty Poseidon:
Have you not abandoned the Trojan ordeal?

You desired their doom. My power is endless,

Had you continued you'd not have won your wish.

All that I decree shall be fulfilled.

If you go where Cronus sits disgraced
surely we shall not be repelled and routed.

Depths behind earth and sea extending endless,
Zeus alone above Ida will be hard pressed.
There you may complete what your hearts desire.

But never will you evade my will or defeat it
you have gone too far; you shall gain nothing from me.
Though all the immortals rise against me.”

I refuse to confront Zeus, even if you unite
Silenced, the goddess could barely breathe from anger.
against him all together: his majesty is greater.
But Hera, having heard him, could not contain

Such words passed among the immortals.
The storm in her breast, and spoke in protest:
Meanwhile Hector's crushing onslaught grew heavier.
“What absurdity from you whose mind has wandered!

its footmen and horses were driven back in defeat.
With care though disaster looms against them.

But this anger will tear them up from their roots!”
so Hera, his guide, stirred Agamemnon.
Zeus the cloud-gatherer replied to her thus:
فَخَاضَso he passed through صُفُوفَthe rows الخَيمِof tents وَالفُلكِand ships رافِعاًraising

He passed through the rows of tents and ships, raising
“At dawn I will wreck the Argives for you
in his arm a red silken cloak.
Before the ships, and stain the earth crimson.”

He reached the fleet's middle, and when he mounted
And Zeus decreed their fate that day.
Odysseus's ship, the company gathered around him.

But the Achaeans kindled fires by the ships,
at its two extremities, confident in their valor.

His voice rose, resounding: O band grown weak
Fifty for each ship, and by the chariots
in heart, though splendid in your speech!
Horses stood near heaps of grain that they ate

Where is that boasting now?
Wheat by barley, waiting till dawn.
Where are the bonds of resolve I see broken?
As stars around the moon glowing bright

While Zeus devised sorrow for both sides.
