Both blazed with rage, now close beside each other,

and both muttered, intent on revenge.

Athena recoiled from her father in disgust,

and rage at the affront nearly overwhelmed her.

Despite her sorrows, she restrained her anger; but Hera

refused patience and spoke harsh words.

She spoke, unable to quench a fire

that fiercely inflamed her seething breast:

'You have wronged me, son of Cronus! Why not

seek to wipe my hopes out utterly,

and thwart my aim and make my labor fruitless,

while my horses are exhausted, body and head?

Against Priam I have driven the troops,

to force his household to drink dreadful death.

Then save them—but the gods, one and all,

are displeased, though silent out of respect.'

He said, seething with rage, 'And what

drives you to such fury, you who wrong them so?

What have they done against you, that you should seek

their blood with such injustice and resolve?

Indeed, if one day you scaled their citadel,

and crushed their flesh, cutting through their bones,

and left no trace of their people,

then your hatred would reach its uttermost limit.

Their reins are yours: decree whatever you wish,

    lest refusal breed a quarrel.

But heed my words and listen to them:

whenever I desire a thing, I carry out my purpose.

And if I wish to strike a people

you love, do not force me into arbitration.

And I have freely granted you what you asked,

though I may have undertaken a forbidden deed.

For beneath the sun and the radiant stars

    are many cities filled with humankind;

and none is more faithful to me than Ilium,

    or Priam and his household.

For on my altars they have always laid

    their sacrifices, drenched in wine,

    وبالعَدلِ استباحُوها اقتساما

    and their smoke has kept rising to the sky;

and they have rightfully taken their share of them.'

She said, 'I have three cities

to which my heart is bound in passionate love:

they are, as you know, Sparta and Argos,

and Mycenae, splendid in its order.

If you wish, destroy them; I

will offer them neither aid nor allegiance.

My resistance would not help me, for I know

that you have taken the reins.

Yet I match you in lineage,

and so surpass the noble gods.

And I have been exalted among the children of Cronus,

though all of them are great.

For I am his daughter and the wife of Zeus,

king of the universe; so honor your bond with me.

So, for a time, indulge what I seek,

and I shall always be content with what you seek.

    فَمُر تَنقَضَّ آَثِينا اقتِحاما

    The immortals seek to follow our example;

so command Athena to swoop down headlong,

to disrupt the two armies' pact; but

let the people of Troy break the peace.'
