Such was their talk in heaven; while on earth
Diomedes never ceased to seek Aeneas.
تَحَدَّمَgrew furious يَبغِيهِseeks him وَيَعلَمُand knows أَنَّماthat it was

He raged in pursuit of him, knowing it was
Apollo who shielded him; yet he felt no fear.
ثَلاثاًthree times عَلَيهِat him كَرَّcharged يَأمُلُhopes قَتلَهُto kill him
وَشِكَّتَهُand his armor الغَرَّاءَgleaming بالعُنفِby force يَسلُبُstrips away
Three times he charged at him, hoping to kill him
and strip away his gleaming armor by force.
وَلِكنbut ثَلاثاًthree times تُرسُthe shield of فِيبُوسَPhoebus صَدَّهُrepelled him
وَرابِعَةًand a fourth time قدindeed كادَwas about to يَسطُوattack وَيَضرِبُand strike
But three times Phoebus's shield repelled him,
and a fourth time he was about to attack and strike,
فَقالَthen he said لَهُto him والصَّوتُand the voice يَدوِيresounds رَعِيدُهُits thunder
ويَعلُوand overspreads مُحَيَّاهُhis face العَبُوسَstern تَقَطُّبُa frown
when Phoebus spoke to him, his voice rolling with thunder,
and a frown overspread his stern face:
مهٍEnough! فَتَرَبَّصso hold back ياO ابنَson of تِيذِيُسٍTydeus فَعَنfor, beyond
بَنيsons of الخُلدِimmortality للإِنسَانِfor mankind قَدindeed عَزَّis beyond reach مَطلَبُa goal
“Enough! Hold back, son of Tydeus! For to rival
the immortal race is a goal beyond mankind's reach.
فشَتَّانَso far apart! بَينَbetween النَّاسِmen وَالتُّربَand the dust أُسكنُواthey were made to dwell
وَقَومِand the race of بَنيsons of الإِسعادِblessedness والنُّورَand the light أُلهِبواthey were set ablaze
For how far apart are men, made to dwell in dust,
and the race of the blessed, set ablaze with light!”
فَكفَّso he desisted ذِيُومِيذٌDiomedes وَماand not كَادَalmost يَنثنيturns back
مَخَافَةَfor fear يَشتَدُّgrows fierce الإِلاهُthe god وَيَغضَبُand grows angry
So Diomedes desisted, scarcely turning back,
for fear the god should grow fierce and angry.
وسارَand he went أَفُلُّونٌApollo بِأَنيَاسَwith Aeneas مُسِرعاًhastening

Apollo hurried away with Aeneas,
making for his temple on Pergamus's height.
فَوافَتهُthen she met him أَرطامِيسُArtemis فيwith بَلسَمِthe balm of الشِّفاhealing

Then Artemis met him with healing balm,
and Dita with an elixir of beauty poured forth.
وَماand not شاءَwished فِيبُوسٌPhoebus يَشيعُbecome known انقلابُهُhis withdrawal
فَأَرسَلَso he sent طَيفاًa phantom مِثلَهُlike him يَتَقَلَّبُmoves to and fro
Phoebus did not wish his withdrawal to become known,
so he sent a phantom in his likeness, moving to and fro.
وَمِنand from حَولِهِaround him بَينَbetween الفَرِيقَينِthe two hosts مُزِّقَتwas torn

And around him, between the two hosts, was rent
close-woven mail, and shields were notched.
وَمِنand from ثَمَّthere فِيبُوسٌPhoebus إِلىto آرسَAres انثَنىturned

And from there Phoebus turned to Ares,
urging him toward battle and reproaching him:
أَياO مُمطِرَshowerer of الأَهوالِterrors ياO باعِثَbringer of الرَّدىdeath
وياهادمَand O razer of الأَسوارِwalls حَتَّىuntil مَwhen? تَرقُبُyou watch
“O showerer of terrors, O bringer of death,
and razer of walls, how long will you stand watching?
أَلاَماwhy not? اندَفَعتَyou rushed الآنَnow فَوقَagainst امرِىءٍa man عَتاgrew insolent
يَكادalmost عَلىagainst زَفسٍZeus يَصُولُcharges وَيَصخَبُand clamors
Why not rush now against a man grown insolent,
who all but charges at Zeus, shouting in fury?
تأَثَّرَpursued قِبرِيساًCypris وَأَدمىand bloodied يَمينَهاher right hand
وَأَقبَلَand he advanced نحويtoward me بَعدَafter ذلِكَthat يَقرَبُdraws near
He pursued Cypris and bloodied her right hand,
then came toward me, drawing near!”
فأَغراهُso he incited him ثُمَّthen اختارَchose فِرغامَPergamus مَعزِلاًa retreat
وآريسُand Ares لِلطُّروَادِto the Trojans راحَbegan يُؤَنِّبُreproaching
So he spurred him on, then chose Pergamus as his retreat,
while Ares began reproaching the Trojans.
فَماثَلَso he resembled آكاماسَAcamas شَكلاًin form وَهَيبَةًand in imposing bearing
وصاحَand shouted أَلاcome! فاسطُواso attack علىupon القَومthe foe واضربواand strike
He took Acamas's form and imposing bearing,
and cried, “Come! Charge the foe and strike!
إِلىuntil مَwhen? التَّراخِيslackness والعِدىwhile the enemy فَتكُهاits ravages بَداbecame evident

How long this slackness, when the enemy's ravages are plain?
Will you ride cowardice until the fortress is razed?
فَأَنياسُfor Aeneas وَالفَتَّاكَand the deadly warrior هَكطُورَHector قدindeed حكىmatched
طَرِيحٌfallen بِسيََّالِwith streaming الدِّماءِblood مُخضَّبُstained
For Aeneas, a match for deadly Hector,
lies fallen, stained with streaming blood.
أَلاَcome! ماnot أَخَذتُمyou took مِنfrom عدَاكُمyour enemies بِثَأرِهِin vengeance for him

Why not take vengeance on your enemies for him
and rescue him? Muster your forces and take aim!”
فَهاجَتthen surged بِهمamong them كُلُّall النُّفُوسِsouls حَمِيَّةًin ardor

Then every soul among them flared with zeal,
and Sarpedon came forward to speak vehemently.
