She glanced at him with an oryx's eye.

Then she said, “And what is this you are saying?

I do not seek to inquire into what

you intend; carry out whatever you yourself desire.

My only fear is that the daughter of the old man of the

sea may gain ascendancy through cunning and pride.

She came to you at dawn and met you, kissing the

    knees, seeking an obvious favor.

And surely you gave your promise that

Achilles would obtain everything he desires,

and, before the Greeks aboard their ships, you would strike

down thousands of heroes, so that you may favor him.”

He said, “You have gone too far in watching me; woe

to you! And you have increased the burden of deceit.

    بَل تَذُوقينَ طَعمُ خَذلٍ كَرِيهِ

    You will gain nothing by that but my aversion;

rather, you will taste loathsome abandonment.

And if you have indeed spoken the truth in what you

said, I shall surely approve of what I carry out.

So keep silent in your place; beware

of defiance! And here is my command: heed it.

You cannot be saved from my heavy arm

by all who dwell in my Olympus.”
