Hector clashed with the foes and confronted them.

At Paesus had been awash in treasures.

To where flanks and sword-belts were transfixed together.

Ajax, but the showering arrows thwarted him.

Drawing out the keen-bladed spear while slaughter raged.

Lest he grow distracted and the throngs overwhelm him.

The scion of Heracles and his equal adversary.

And when they drew near, within spear-cast range,

The Heraclid acted haughtily toward him, boasting.
