And Achilles remained furious beside his ship,
Achilles sulked by his tent, far from the assembly where warriors excel,
far from the council, the pride of the valiant,
In his heart a fire of isolation burned, and sorrow for the tumult of war and armies.
يُؤَجّجُhe fans فيin أَحشائِهِhis inmost parts نارَthe fire عُزلةٍof solitude

fanning in his breast the fire of solitude
On the twelfth dawn since he took this stance,
and longing for the clamors of battle and the armies.
Zeus came among the immortal nobles.
وَفيand at فَجرِthe dawn ثضانِيsecond عَشرَten يَوماًa day مَقَامَهُof his stay

At dawn on the twelfth day of his stay,
Thetis did not forget her vows,
Zeus came among the noble company of immortals.
She parted the mists and came between the stages.
ولَمand not تَكُwas ثِيتيسٌThetis لِتَنسَىto forget وُعُودَهَاher promises

Nor was Thetis one to forget her promises;
She passed through the open sky to where Zeus was
so she cleft the surging waters between her journey’s stages.
On the highest summit among the lofty mountains.
تَجَاوَزَتِshe crossed الجَوَّthe air الفَسِيحَvast إلىto السَّماthe heavens

She crossed the vast air to the heavens,
Apart from the others, possessor of perfect wisdom.
to where Zeus, among the bare mountains,
She drew near and clasped her arms around him,

Touching the beard of the lord of the sublime.
far from the others, majestic in bearing.

She drew near him and stepped forward seeking protection,
Seeking his favor by every means.
and touched with her right hand the chin of the lord of monarchs,
O father of men, Zeus, if my loyal service in word and deed among the kindred is true,

and leaned with her left hand, kissing his knee,
Honor my son, though among men he is most inclined to destruction,
and sought favor by every means.
For his comrade has brought him down and destroyed him.

O father of creation, Zeus, if I have served you faithfully
Do not abandon him, in whom the blemishes of mankind are made clear.
by my words and deeds among the company of the noblest,
Rouse the army of Troy to make his worth great,

protect my son, of all men nearest to death;
And let the Greeks place him in the highest rank.
for Atreides has abased him as a betrayer would,
The rattling thundercloud did not answer

and deprived him of a share; do not cast him aside, O
The suppliant who cried out insistently.
wise one, in whom the brightest virtues shine.
Why do you hesitate? Make excuses and speak,
أَفِزgrant victory to جَيشَthe army طُروَاداof Troy لِيَعظُمَso that it may grow قَدرُهُhis worth

Grant victory to Troy’s army, that his worth may grow
Promise or refuse my hopes.
and the Greeks accord him the highest station.
He made my humiliation known among the immortals,

Then the cloud-gatherer delayed and did not answer.
Exhaling heavily, burdened.
She fell upon his knees and cried: Come, grant it! [Reading uncertain.]
The path is narrow if I were to nod in agreement here

And what is it you fear? Abandon your excuses,
To her who rose up against me with rudeness and provocation,
and speak or signal a promise, or deny the boon I seek,
Then in the council of the gods they would resent me
فأَعلَمَso I may know بينَamong الخالِدينَthe immortals مَذَلَّتيmy humiliation

so I may know my humiliation among the immortals.
And say I aid wantonness.
Then he spoke, letting out a reluctant sigh:
Begone, look not for a ready favor.
لذَلِكfor that عِبرٌa passage [uncertain reading] ضَيقٌnarrow إِنif نُمِيit is reported هُناhere
لشهيراto Hera انبَرَتshe will rise against ليme بالجَفاwith harshness والقَلاَقِلِand troubles
This is a difficult course [reading uncertain]; if this is reported here
I will consider what you request, and I gesture
to Hera, she will rise against me with harshness and turmoil.
A promise to answer in the abode of eternity,

Thus she inflames my breast, for with every slander
A sure, steadfast pledge that will not be marred by misfortune.
in the assembly of the gods she burdens my shoulders,
He blinked his lids, and his hair shook,

and claims that I am a supporter of the Trojans.
The throne of eternity trembled with the strongest earthquake.
So spring up in haste, and let her not see you.

I shall consider what you seek; and take this—
a sign proclaiming a promise of assent.

For in it, in the abode of immortality, lies a confirmed pledge,
secure and steadfast, never to be touched by harm.
وَحَرَّكَand he moved جَفَنيهِhis eyelids فمادَتso swayed شُعُورُهُhis locks

And he moved his eyelids, and his locks swayed,
and the throne of immortality was shaken by the mightiest tremors.
