Then Agamemnon said, “Old man, words of wisdom
Agamemnon said, "O wise elder
you have spoken; but this warrior grows arrogant.
You have spoken, but this warrior seeks

He seeks the power to command and forbid; yet
To control command and prohibition. Only
I know one who neither fears him nor yields.
By my knowledge of those who do not mock or submit.

Even if the gods have granted him strength,
And if the masters have granted him arrogance
have they allowed him to insult men of worth?”
Did they sanction the disgrace of the virtuous?
أَجابَanswered أَخِيلٌAchilles للحَدِيثِthe speech مُقاطِعاًinterrupting
بأمرِكَwith your command مُرcommand غيرِيsomeone other than me فَلمso why يَمتَثِلobey مِثليone like me

Achilles answered, interrupting the speech:
Achilles responded, interrupting the speech
“Give your orders to someone else; why should one like me obey?
Order another unlike me to obey.
فإنfor if رُحتُI become مُنقاداًsubmissive لقَولٍto a word تَقُولُهُyou say it

For if I submit to something you say,
If I come guided by a saying you state
then call me a wretch, the lowest of the low.
Then call me lowly and more abject than the abject
ولكنَّbut ليI have قَولاًa statement صَرِيحاًplain فَخُذso take heed بهِof it

But I have a plain word to say; heed it:
But I have an explicit word, take it
I will not draw my blade over my girl,
I will not defend any of you

nor confront any of you in her defense,
To rob me by force what I obtained by justice
since you seize by force what I gained by right.
And without it, beware of reaching for what

And apart from her, beware of reaching a hand toward what

my ships contain. Act, if you are eager for action:

the army will see what you do, and my spear will swiftly
Will spill your black blood. So erupt when provoked."
spill your black blood—try me, if you would put me to the test.”
Thus they parted after discord and hatred
كَذَاthus انفَصَلاthe two parted بَعدَafter اختِصامٍa quarrel وَحِدَّةٍand anger
وَفُضَّand was dispersed اجتِماعُthe gathering الحَشدِof the host منfrom بَعدِafter ذَاthis الفصلِparting
Thus the two parted after quarrelling and anger,
And the crowd's gathering dispersed after this split
and the gathering of the host broke up after this parting.
Achilles to his camp and tent on the far plain
فآخِيلُthen Achilles فيwith فَطرُقلَPatroclus والصَّحبِand the companions قافلاًreturning

Then Achilles returned with Patroclus and his companions
And Agamemnon launched for the sailors a ship
to his ships and the tents at the far end of the plain.
With twenty sailors cleared without delay
وَأترِيذُand Atreides أَلقىlaunched للعُبَابِonto the surging sea سَفِينةًa ship
بِعِشرِينwith twenty مَلاَّحاًsailors تَنَقَّىhe selected بلاwithout مَهلِdelay
And Atreides launched a ship onto the surging sea,
Aboard were Chryseis and gifts for Phoebus
with twenty sailors he selected without delay.
Its captain was Odysseus, virtuous and wise
وَفيهاand aboard her خَرِيساChryseis والضَّحاياand the sacrificial beasts لِفيبُسٍfor Phoebus
ورَبَّانُهاand her captain أُوذِيسُOdysseus ذُوpossessing الفَضلِmerit والعَقلِand wisdom
And aboard her were Chryseis and the sacrificial beasts for Phoebus,
And since Agamemnon embarked, he called his troops
and her captain was Odysseus, a man of merit and wisdom.
For ablution and cleansing. They rose to wash
وَمُذand once مَخَرَتshe cleaved the sea أَترِيذُAtreides نادَىcalled بِجُندِهِto his troops
وُضُوءاَablution وَتَطهِيراًand purification فقامُواso they rose إِلَىto الغُسلِbathing
And once she cleaved the waves, Atreides called on his troops
Donned them and poured out refuse in the sea
to wash and purify themselves; they rose to bathe.
And led the best calves and lambs as offerings
ولَبَّوهُand they answered him وَالأقذًارَand the impurities فيinto البَحرِthe sea أَفرَغُواthey poured
وَقادُواand they led الضَّحاياthe sacrificial beasts خِيرَةthe choicest الثَّورِbulls والسَّخلِand kids
And they answered his call and poured the impurities into the sea,
They lit for them on the shore a fire that rose
and led the sacrificial beasts, the choicest bulls and kids,
As smoke to the sky, its aromas rising high
وأَذكَواand they kindled لهاfor them فيon الجُرفِthe bank ناراًa fire تَصَاعَدَتrose

and kindled for them a fire on the bank, which rose
Thus they busied themselves while Agamemnon
as smoke to the blue sky, lifting their aromas aloft.
Kept devising tricks against noble Achilles

All were busy with this, while Atreides remained
He called Euribates and Talthybius, men
absorbed in his thoughts of plotting against Achilles.

He summoned Eurybates, then Talthybius, who
And said, "Go, lead away Briseis by her wrist

And if he refuses, I will come to him with a band of men
myself, and he will suffer defeat upon defeat.”
