Where, Hector, is the spirit you had of old?

Where are your valor and the reach of your steadfast resolve?

You claimed you could defend the strongholds with no

helpers, no army, but only the people of the strongholds.

    كالككلابِ التوَوا لأُسدِ العَرِينِ

    Where are they—where? I find no armored warrior;

like dogs, they cowered before the lions of the lair.

We are only reinforcements, and upon us

you have cast the whole weight of death.

You know how far away my homeland lies—

Lycia, the land of blessed Xanthus.

There I left my wife behind,

and my boy, and a hoard of precious wealth.

And here I have no possessions or

wealth to make me fear the enemy might rob me.

None of this has kept my hand from striking,

yet I see you withdrawn, plainly at rest.

Why, then, do you not rouse your resolve and

defend honor from the horror of manifest disgrace?

Have you not thought that there are snares

lying hidden for you—and how well concealed!

And in them you will be caught, to your utter ruin,

and the strongholds will be shattered upon your backs.

Attend to the leaders of the allies; then drive

ill suspicions from them through steadfastness.

    نُصبَ عَينَيكَ فَليَكُن كُلَّ حِينِ

    That, that—ponder it by day and by night;

let it be before your eyes at all times.
