أَياO أَترِيذُAtreides ياO ساميexalted المَقامِrank
أَيا أَترِيذُ يا سامي المَقامِ
Then Achilles, the chosen one, said: “Hold—

O Atreides, you of lofty station!
O Atreides, exalted in rank,
أَأَطمَعَO greediest كُلِّof every مَخلُوقٍcreature أَتَرجُوdo you hope for
أَأَطمَعَ كُلِّ مَخلُوقٍ أَتَرجُو
مُكَافأَةَrecompense الأَراغَسةِthe Argives العظَامِthe mighty
مُكَافأَةَ الأَراغَسةِ العظَامِ
Greediest of all creatures, do you expect
O greediest of all creatures, do you expect
a recompense from the mighty Argives?

فَلَيسfor there is no لَهُمfor them وتعلَمُand you know بَيتُhouse مالٍwealth
فَلَيس لَهُم وتعلَمُ بَيتُ مالٍ
يَضُمُّit holds كُنُوزَtreasures أَموالٍwealth رُكمِheaped up
يَضُمُّ كُنُوزَ أَموالٍ رُكمِ
They have, as you know, no treasury
For they have no treasury, as you know,
containing heaped-up stores of wealth.
holding hoards of wealth piled high.
فماfor what نِلناwe obtained مِنَfrom المُدُنthe cities اللَّواتيwhich
فما نِلنا مِنَ المُدُن اللَّواتي
دَكَكناwe razed شاعَwas shared بينَamong ذَويholders of السِهَامِthe shares
دَكَكنا شاعَ بينَ ذَوي السِهَامِ
For whatever we gained from the cities
For what we took from the cities that
we razed has been apportioned among the warriors.
we razed was shared among those entitled to shares.
وكَيفَand how يليقُis fitting سَهمَthe share of الجُندِthe troops نجبُوwe collect back
وكَيفَ يليقُ سَهمَ الجُندِ نجبُو
وقدand already نالُواthey gained علىover هامٍheads وهامِand heads
وقد نالُوا على هامٍ وهامِ
And how could we exact the soldiers’ shares
And how is it fitting to reclaim the soldiers' share,
when they won them at the cost of head upon head?

فَعَدِّso relent وأَرجِعَنَّand be sure to return فَتاةَthe maiden of قَومٍa people
فَعَدِّ وأَرجِعَنَّ فَتاةَ قَومٍ
أَثارُواthey aroused غَيظَthe wrath of رَشَّاقِthe shooter of السِّهامِthe arrows
أَثارُوا غَيظَ رَشَّاقِ السِّهامِ
So relent, and return the people’s maiden—

they have roused the wrath of the arrow-shooter.

ومَوعِدُناand our pledge إِذَاwhen إِليُونُIlium دُكَّتis razed

بنِعمَةِ زَفسنا مَولى الأَنامِ
Our promise stands: when Ilium is laid low,

by the favor of our Zeus, Lord of humankind,
by the grace of our Zeus, lord of mankind,
بأَضعَافٍwith multiples مُثَلَّثَةٍtripled وأَوفىand more
بأَضعَافٍ مُثَلَّثَةٍ وأَوفى
نُجيزُكَwe shall reward you فاعتَبِرso consider حَرِجَdire المَقامِthe situation
نُجيزُكَ فاعتَبِر حَرِجَ المَقامِ
threefold and in fullest measure
with threefold recompense and more,
we shall repay you—so recognize the straits we are in.”
