فقالَthen he said أَخِيلُAchilles يَشزِرُهُglaring at him غضُوباًfurious
أَياO طَمِعاًgreedy man تَدَثَّرَcloaked himself بالشَّنارِin disgrace
Then Achilles spoke, glaring angrily at him:
Achilles angrily rebuked him,
O greedy man, cloaked in disgrace!
"O you who greedily donned armor,
وهَلand is there فيamong القَومِthe host بعدُstill فَتًىa young man خِداعاًby deceit
تَغُرُّyou beguile هُناhere فَيَبدُرَso he rushes forth فيin بدارِhaste
And is there still a young man among the host whom, by deceit,
Is there anyone left among these men who is crafty enough
You can beguile here into rushing eagerly forward?
That you would lure him here and attack in the wilderness?
عَلِمتَyou know بأَنَّنيthat I لمdid not آتِcome بُغضاًout of hatred
بأَقوامِfor the peoples الطَّرَاوِدةِof the Trojans الكِبارِthe mighty
You know that I did not come out of hatred
You know well that I did not come with hatred
For the mighty Trojan people;
For the great Trojans.
فَقَطُّfor, ever عَليَّagainst me لمdid not يَبغُواthey wrong بسُوءٍwith harm
وماand not سَلَبواthey stole خيوليmy horses اوor ثِياريmy oxen
For they have never done me harm,
I have done them no wrong,
Nor stolen my horses or my oxen.
Nor have they stolen my horses or spoils.
وماand not نَهَبُواthey plundered بِأُمِّin the mother of البُهمِthe lambs فثياPhthia
وذاتِand possessing الخَصبِfertility زَرعيmy crops فيin دِياريmy homeland
Nor have they plundered in Phthia, mother of lambs
They have not raided the fertile fields of my land
And land of plenty, my crops in my homeland.
With their roaring army.
ففيماfor, in what lies بَينَناbetween us لُجَجٌdeep waters عِماقٌdeep
وغاباتٌand forests علىupon الشُّمّthe lofty peaks القِفارِthe desolate
For deep waters lie between us,
Between us lie vast swamps
And forests on the lofty, desolate peaks.
And forests in the barren hills.
وإليوناًand Ilium أمَمناهاwe headed toward it التماساًseeking
لِماfor what يُرضِيكَpleases you نَأخُذُهَاwe take it بِثارِin vengeance
And we made for Ilium, seeking
We have come here to seek
To please you by taking it in vengeance,
Recompense that satisfies you, which we will take as vengeance,
ونَدفَعُand we ward off عنfrom مَنِيلاMenelaus شَرَّthe harm of بُؤسٍmisery
وعَنكَand from you وقدand indeed جُزِيتُI was repaid بالاِحتقارِwith contempt
And to ward off misery's harm from Menelaus,
And to ward off wretched misfortune
And from you—yet I have been repaid with contempt.
From Menoetius’ son, though I’ve been repaid with contempt,
ورُمتَand you coveted سَبِيَّةًa captive woman ماnot نِلتُI obtained إِلاَّexcept
بِبَطشيby my might إثرَafter إِعلاءِraising الغُبارِthe dust
And you coveted a captive woman I won only
And you have cast aspersions on a captive I did not take
Through my might, after raising the dust.
Except by might after the swirling dust of battle.
حَبَانِيهاgranted her to me الأَخاءُthe Achaeans وأنتَand you منهُمare among them
أَياO كَلباًdog يَصُولُhe lunges بِطَرفِwith a gaze عارِbare of shame
The Achaeans gave her to me, and you are one of them,
My brothers-in-arms granted her to me, yet you, a wretched cur,
O dog who lunges with a shameless gaze!
Snarl at me in your shamelessness.
فإِنfor if نَمرَحwe revel بطُروادٍin the Troad زَماناًfor a time
وَعِثناand we wreaked havoc بالمَدَائنin the cities بالبَوَارِwith destruction
For if we revel in the Troad awhile,
If we plunder Troy for a time
And wreak ruin upon the cities,
And roam its cities reducing them to ruins,
وأمسَيناand we reached evening نُقَسِمُwe divide ماwhat سَلبَناwe plundered
فَلِيthen mine is نضزرٌa pittance (probable reading) وتَحظىand you receive بالخِيَارِthe choicest
And at evening divide what we have plundered,
And in the evening divide the spoils we have seized,
Then mine is a pittance, while you take the choicest.
Let me keep my share and you take what you wish.
فحَظُّكَfor your share قدindeed تَراخىhas lagged عَنهُbehind it حَظِّيmy share
وباعيand my arm حُمِّلتwas made to bear ثِقلَthe burden of الطَّوَاريsudden calamities
For my share has fallen far behind yours,
Your fortune has declined; the burden
While my arm was made to bear the burden of calamities.
Of the heavy cargo has been loaded onto me.
وأرضىand I accept قِسمَتيmy share وأَسيرُand I go فيهاwith it
لِفلكيto my ships مُفعماًfilled شَرَرَsparks of الأُوارِblazing heat
And I accept my share and go with it
Yet I am content with my portion and will follow my destiny,
To my ships, filled with sparks of searing fire.
My ship fully laden with glowing embers.
سأُقلِعُI shall set sail راجعاًhomeward ولَدَيَّand in my view خيرٌbetter
أُعاوِدُI return to مَوطنِيmy homeland وأَحُلُّand I settle in درايmy home (probable reading)
I shall sail homeward; I deem it better
I will set sail homeward, for I have good things there -
To return to my homeland and settle in my home.
I will return to my homeland and unfasten my helmet strap -
وأَشهَدُand I attest لستَyou will not تَلقىfind بَعدَafter خَذليmy withdrawal of support
كُنُوزَtreasures المالِof wealth فيin جُرُفِcliffs البِحارِof the seas
And I declare: once I withdraw my support, you will not find
And I will testify that after my withdrawal you will not find
Treasures of wealth along the cliffs of the seas.
Treasures of gold in the rocky pits of the sea."
