أَيُّwhat جَهلٍignorance مُشِيرَO counsellor لِيقِيَةٍof Lycia أَغlured (beginning of أغراك)

رَاكَyou (completion of أغراك) حَتَّىuntil استَهدَفتَyou made yourself a target أَيُّwhat جُنُونِmadness
What ignorance, counsellor of Lycia, lured
What ignorance counsels the fool who attacked you?
You into making yourself a target—what madness!
What madness you and infamy since you were a lad!
أَنتَyou والكرُّand charging فيهِinto it مُذsince كُنتَyou were غُرًّاinexperienced
قَدindeed تَوَرَّطتَyou became embroiled وَرطَةَthe predicament المَغبُونِof the duped
You, charging into it since you were a novice,
You have fallen into the trap of the wretched.
Have landed yourself in a dupe's predicament.
Who said you're from Zafas' lineage?
مانَlied مَنwhoever قالَsaid أَنتَyou مِنfrom نَسلِthe offspring زَفسٍof Zeus
أَينَwhere أَبناءُthe sons زَفَسَof Zeus مِنcompared with سَرفِدُونِSarpedon
Whoever said you descend from Zeus lied.
Where are the sons of Zafas from Serfendun?
How far apart are Zeus's sons and Sarpedon!
With Heraclius my father you're enough as an example,
بِهِرَقلٍin Heracles أَبيmy father كَفاكَsuffices for you مِثالاًas an example
قلبُa heart لَيثٍof a lion وَهَولُand the terror كُلِّof all القُرُونِgenerations
Heracles, my father, is example enough for you:
The heart of a lion and awe of all eras.
A lion's heart, and the terror of every age.
You were told before how he came long ago
قَبلُpreviously أُنبِئتَyou were told كَيفَhow جاءَhe came قَدِيماًlong ago
طامِعاًeager فيfor جيادِthe steeds لَومِيدُونِof Laomedon
You were told before how he came long ago,
Greedy for the steeds of Lomidun,
Eager for the steeds of Laomedon,
With six ships and little equipment
بِسَفينٍwith ships سِتٍsix وَنَزرٍand a scant number قَلِيلٍsmall
أَمطَرَhe rained الوَيلَwoe فيupon حِماthe protected domain إِليُونِof Ilion
With six ships and a scant few,
He rained woe on the wall of Ilion.
He rained woe upon Ilion's domain.
How different you are from the vanished valor
أَينَwhere شَتَّانَhow far apart أَنتَyou وَالحَتفُand death أَفنىhas destroyed
مِنكَof yours قَوماًa people وَأَنتَand you بادِيshowing الشُّجُونِsorrows
How far you stand from him! And death has destroyed
That destroyed a people while you whine.
Your people, while your grief is plain.
No use in your lineage of cowards,
لَيسَthere is no فيin رِفدِكَyour aiding الطَّرَاوِدِthe Trojans جَدوَىbenefit
وَلَئِنand even if صُلتَyou charge فالرَّدىthen death بِيَمينيis in my right hand
Your aid to the Trojans is of no avail,
And if you fight on, ruin is in my right hand.
And even if you charge, death lies in my right hand.
Serfendun said, made distinct by rage:
قالَsaid سَرفِيدُونٌSarpedon ومَيَّزَهُand marked him الغَيthe rage (beginning of الغيظ)
ظُcompletion of الغيظ, 'rage' نَعمyes بالحَديثِof the tale قَدindeed أَنبأُinformed (beginning of أنبأوني) ونيthey … me (ending of أنبأوني)
Sarpedon said, marked by rage:
"Yes, good sir, you have informed me.
Yes, they have told me the tale.
Heraclius razed Ilion, no -
فهرَقلٌso Heracles قَدindeed دَكَّrazed إِليُونَIlion لاno بَلrather
دَكَّهاrazed it حُمقٌthe folly لَومِدُونَof Laomedon الرَّعُونِthe reckless
So Heracles razed Ilion—no, rather,
The stupid Lomiduns, those shepherds, razed it.
The folly of reckless Laomedon razed it.
Heraclius did not keep his promise, but
لِهِرَقلٍto Heracles ماnot بَرَّhe kept faith بالوَعدِwith the promise لكِنbut
مَنَعَhe withheld الخَيلَthe horses عَنهُfrom him مَنعَthe withholding الضَّنِينِof a miser
He did not keep his promise to Heracles, but
They denied him the horses, denied the envious.
Withheld the horses from him as a miser would.
He attacked him though earlier he had
وَرَماهُand shot at him وَكانَand he had قَبلُearlier دَعاهُsummoned him
مِنfrom بَعِيدٍafar بِسَهمِwith an arrow شَتمٍof abuse مُهِينِdegrading
And shot at him—though he had earlier summoned him
Summoned him from afar with vile insult.
From afar—with an arrow of degrading abuse.
You and your armor are in my fist.
إِنَّماindeed أَنتَyou وَالسِّنانُand the spearhead بِكَفِّيin my palm
سَوفَshall تُصمَىbe struck dead بِرَأسِby the tip نَصلِيof my blade السِّنينِkeen-edged
But you, with the spearhead in my hand,
You will be smashed by my sharp spear blade,
Shall be struck dead by the tip of my keen blade.
And by the Lord of Hell your soul will be flung
وَلِرَبِّand to the lord الجَحيمِof the underworld نفسُكَyour soul تُزجيis sent forth
وَليand mine الفخرُthe glory بِالمَنارِwith the beacon المَصُونِkept inviolate
And your soul shall be sent to the lord of the underworld,
While glory in the guarded pillar is mine."
And mine the glory, with its beacon inviolate.
