Then she said: “Ajax is their bulwark; opposite him

Idomeneus commands the troops of Crete.

You see him standing like a god among its leaders,

Surrounded by supporters chosen from the noble chiefs.

And how often he lodged among us before, an honored guest!

And my husband Menelaus honors guests and provides food.

And here they all are; ask, and I will tell you about them.

Great chieftains from among them have appeared before you.

And yet I do not see my two loving brothers:

They are Castor, the master horse-tamer when a racecourse is opened,

And Pollux, who throws every wrestler.

Did they not set out from Lacedaemon with those who went,

Or did they hide in the ships, fearing exposure

To disgrace, with its burdens of blame for the stain upon my honor?”

And she did not know: the earth, in the deserted homeland,

Enfolded them both—and life, like a phantom, is ever passing.
