Longing blazed in the innermost depths and throbbed.

And worry and sorrows drained what they had wounded.

By God, is there healing for wasting sickness?

So tears at parting from you have shot forth and streamed [reading uncertain].

Or is there an end to estrangement from loved ones [reading uncertain]?

And sorrow has assailed the heart with afflictions.

Indeed, hope is the life-breath of souls, and so they rejoiced.

So the sorrows that had assailed them fell away from them.

Then these sorrows turned back and blazed up.

And afterward kindled a blaze in the innermost depths.

And that was in the prose set in verse, when he promised

departure and return, as he claimed.

And departure unsettled the mind after rejoicing,

from Bahu Yal to Musi—how often it wounded!

And how many steady showers it poured from the eyelids!

But for hope, they would have grown wet with blood after tears.

So now, burning in the blaze of sorrows,

is he who once took his place amid the delights of wine.

And now, laid low in the telling of grief,

is he who once smiled with the rapture of joy.

And longing is ablaze in the hearts of loved ones [reading uncertain].

Had that been in the brother's heart, it would have been wounded [reading uncertain].

But there was no flame in his heart

from the remoteness of parting; so the beloved was mistaken.

For longing inflames whoever has love's bewilderment in his heart,

and yearning unsettles a heart that grew in passionate love.
