Hark, O rider, stop for me a moment.

May God guide you; listen to these words.

And take a scant little portion of their outpouring,

For it has kindled a blaze within my entrails.

And, my brother, openly convey to Saʿd

    Blessed, abundant greetings,

Their fragrance wafting with aromatic incense and musk.

And after him, convey a greeting of peace to ʿAmr:

A greeting free from every fault,

And from any blemish—far be it to incur blame.

And after the greeting, my heart indeed

Has sorrows blazing fiercely within it.

Much time has passed; would that I knew:

Do you know what has inflamed and afflicted me?

And had you known, you would not have shown me

    Blame-filled reproach, or such words.

For if there were life within the hearts,

Tears would overflow and pour forth in streams.

And despite those calamities, we were not heedless,

Nor, our loved ones, were we asleep.

And we never forsook you, but

Wrote you greetings of peace upon the sheets,

And accounts of circumstances and grievous terrors,

    And tidings and momentous events.

And no reply has yet come to us from you

That would make withholding an answer a fault.

So be gentle, our loved ones, for we

Have not betrayed a pledge under that covenant.

And it has not been hidden from you, O those I hold dear,

Nor shall we seek an end to its broad path.

And I shall not forget you while I live, until

The two acacia-gatherers return; nor shall I be blamed.

And as long as ʿAsīb stands, day by day,

I shall sustain my affection for you for as long as it stands.

And I do not break faith with the covenant of a friend,

A loyal one who does not betray it and remains true.

And I honor the rights of whoever honors mine,

And overlook his offense out of deference.

So say whatever you wish, for I

See no fault and no blame.
